Description

Title: An Aerosol Container or Similar Dispensing Device for Discharing Pressurized Liquids.
Technical Field
The invention relates to an aerosol container or similar dispensing device for discharing pressurized liquids,es¬ pecially intermediate products for two-component sub¬ stances, said container being in fixed connection with an inserted.receptacle with a detachable lid, the contents of said receptacle by removel of said lid being capable of being emptied into the container.
Background Art
From EP Patent Application No. 42128 an aerosol contain¬ er is known for discharing pressurized liquids. The con¬ tainer is combined to an additional receptacle, which together with the container forms an undetachable unit. The inner compartment of the aerosol container and the inner compartment of the additional receptacle are sep¬ arated by a common wall and may be opened in at least one place by pressure.
The pressure is produced by pressing a rod against a piston in the additional receptacle until a lid is push¬ ed off. As the pressure in the surrounding container can be quite high, and the pressure on the piston has to be even higher to push off the lid, the rod is provided with a thread engaging a corresponding thread in the bot¬ tom of the container, to enable an achievement of a suf¬ ficient pressure. The long threaded rod is enclosed separately with the container and has to be screwed in from the bottom of the container, until the lid is push- ed off, which may include a great number of revolutions of the rod and a correspondingly long time. Furthermore the threaded rod may be lost by mistake, whereby the pushing off of the lid will be impossible. The object of the present invention is to provide a con¬ tainer of the above mentioned type, whereby two sepa¬ rated components may be mixed in a more simple, quicker and more reliable manner than hitherto.
Disclosure of Invention
This object is obtained by the lid being in loose en¬ gagement with one end of a rod, said rod extending axial- ly and concentrically relative to the inserted recep¬ tacle in its entire length, whereby the other end of the rod projects beyond the container. Consequently the lid engages the longitudinal rod directly and may with cer¬ tainty be disengaged by actuation of said rod.extending at least a small distance beyond the container.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention the rod is pivotal and the upper' end of the rod com¬ prises an outer thread engaging a corresponding inner thread on the lid. As a result the lid may be screwed off by turning the rod. While unscrewing the lid, the volume of the compartment of the inserted receptable will increase somewhat. When the lid is off, the con¬ tainer is to be shaken thoroughly, and the two liquidswillmix.
According to another embodiment of the invention the rod is pivotal and the engagement of the lid with the rod is formed as a bajonet socket.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention the lower, projecting end of the rod comprises a transverse bore through which a transversely extending device, e.g. a split pin or ring, extends. As a result the rod may very easily be turned, and the small ring allows the container to stand upright.
According to a further embodiment of the invention the rod is connected to a cylindrical tray cap, in which the bottom part of the can may be received and which com¬ prises a central pin capable of being connected with torsional strength to the rod of the inserted receptacle, 5 so that the rod will follow the turning of the tray cap. This embodiment will also allow the container to stand upright, i.e. to stand on its tray cap or "bottom cap", and the cap will have a second function as a grip used for the unscrewing of the lid.
According to the invention a compression spring is dis¬ posed in the inserted receptacle for opening the lid. Such a spring will have the effect that the lid is pushed up when screwed off. If the pressure of the container (the outer member) is considerably higher than the pressure in the inserted receptacle (the inner mem¬ ber) the compression spring is capable of cooperating with the thread on top of the rod when the lid is pushed off.
The compression spring may abut a recess or an enlarge- ment of the rod, or a recess on the inner wall of the inserted receptacle. As a result a very short spring may be utilized.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention a sealing is provided, e.g. in the form of a disc fixed in relation to the rod in the bottom of the inserted re¬ ceptacle, said receptacle optionally being provided with a peripheral rim part having sealing lips and/or said receptacle having a sealing in the form of an 0-ring located around a socket forming a bearing for the rod at the bottom of the inserted receptacle. Such sealings are of great importance in order to avoid leakage, which would involve the risk that the usually pressurized liquid in the container - after the lid of the inserted
OMPI receptacle has been opened - pressed liquid through the rod bore in the bottom of the receptacle. Simultaneous¬ ly these sealings may be constructed to counteract an axial displacement of the rod, which may or may not be desirablein the embodiments according to the invention.
Brief Description of the Drawing
The invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which
Fig. 1 is a partial sectional view of an embodiment ac- cording to the invention,
Fig. 2 is an exploded, sectional view of a second em¬ bodiment of the invention,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a third embodiment accor¬ ding to the invention.
Best Mode for Carrying out the Invention
Fig. 1 shows a first embodiment according to the inven¬ tion. In an aerosol container 10 an additional, inner receptacle 12 is inserted. The receptacle 12 is cylin¬ drical and in the bottom it comprises an outwardly pro- jecting, cylindrical socket 14 having an outer thread 16. The thread 16 of the socket corresponds to an inner thread of a nut 18. The outwardly projecting socket has a diameter smaller than the rest of the receptacle 12. By tightening the nut 18, the receptacle 12 may be ain- tained in a rigid close connection with the container 10. An 0-ring 20 seals the connection between the outer container 10 and the inserted receptacle 12.
The other end of the receptacle 12 is closed by a lid forming a tight fit with the cylindrical inner wall of the receptacle. The top 44 of the lid 24, cf. Fig. 2, has an outer diam¬ eter fitting with the outer diameter of the top of the receptacle 12, and the bottom 46 of the lid has an outer diameter fitting tightly into the inner of the recepta- cle 12.
A rod 22 extends a ially and centrally through the in¬ serted receptacle 12. The rod extends all the way to the lid 24, the upper end of the rod 22 and the lid 24 being detachably connected, e.g. by means of a thread or a bajonet socket as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The rod 22 is provided with a gasket or a piston-like radial enlargement 26, which partly functions as a stop for the axial downward displacement of the rod and par¬ tly cooperates to seal the bottom of the receptacle.
Below the radial enlargment 26 the rod 22 has a substan¬ tially smooth part 28, which forms a tight fit with the lower opening 38 on the socket 14 of the inserted receptable 12.
In the lower end 28 of the rod 22 projecting from the container a ring 42 is mounted in the through-hole 40. The ring 42 can be used as a grip for turning the rod 22.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the lid 24, the rod 22 and the inserted receptacle 12 in a second embodiment, wherein a spring 30 may be incorporated. In Fig. 2 the aerosol container is not shown, as it is unimportant to the invention and may be any pressure container of a known type. The spring 30 abuts a recess 32 and when the lid 24 is screwed onto the thread at the top of the rod 22, it will be firmly fixed between said
OMPI recess 32 and the lid 24. In the embodiment shown the recess is located approximately in the middle of the rod, but in another embodiment the recess may be completely omitted, as the spring may extend from bottom to lid. It may furhtermore be more advantageous to place the recess higher up and use an even shorter spring. The spring may also be tapered so that its lower end abuts the small recess 32 and its upper end abuts the lid ad¬ jacent the outer periphery thereof.
A third embodiment shown in Fig. 3 uses a spring, too. In this embodiment the spring 30' abuts a recess 34 on the inner side of the cylindrical, inserted receptacle 12. In this embodiment the rod 22 is at its upper end 36' adapted to be connected to the lid by means of a bajonet socket.
At the lower end of the rod 22 an 0-ring 56 is mounted on the bottom part 28 , said 0-ring forming a sealing be¬ tween the socket 14 and the rod part 28 .
When manufacturing the container according to the inven- tion, the inner receptacle is made ready for insertion, cf. Fig. 2, by inserting the rod 22 into the receptacle 12, so that the smooth lower end 28 of the rod forms a tight fit with the socket 14, said socket optionally be¬ ing sealed by means of an additional 0-ring 56. The bot- torn part 28 of the through-hole 40 projects under the socket 14. A spring 30 may optionally be inserted and the receptacle 12 filled with the desired substance, normally one of the components in a two-component mix¬ ture*, the lid 24 is then carefully screwed on by means of the projecting bottom part 28 of the rod 22. The ring 42 or a specially made tool is inserted into the through-hole 40 and twisted to force the rod 22 around. Thereby the thread 36 on top of the rod is screwed into the inner thread of the lid 24. The joint between the
OM lid and the rod may also be shaped as a bajonet socket as shown in Fig. 3. An O-ring 20 or a similar gasket is placed .on the socket 14 of the receptacle 12, and the filled and closed receptacle is inserted into the con- tainer 10 from the open top of the latter, and the sock¬ et 14 is guided into a hole in the bottom of the con¬ tainer 10. The inserted receptacle is then tightened by means of a nut 18, cf. Fig. 1 and by a suitable tool of a known type for maintaining or twisting the receptacle 12 inside the container 10. This tool may be a long hollow cylinder capable of receiving exactly the upper part of the cylindrical, inserted receptacle 12. The tool and/or the inner receptacle may be provided with means preventing a mutual turning between tool and receptacle.
The locking ring 42 is passed through the hole 40 in the lower end of the rod 22. When the aerosol container is to be stored, the ring 42 may lie flat against the bot¬ tom of the container. The ring 42 prevents the rod from sliding up or down in the inserted receptacle.
When the contents of the container is to be used, the ring 42 is turned in such a way that the rod 22 is turned relative to the lid 24 which is in part firmly fixed in the cylindrical receptacle 12. As the rod cannot be displaced out of the receptacle because of the gasket¬ like radial enlargement26, the lid 24 is pushed upwards and is thus finally disengaged. This can advantageously be supported by a spring 30 causing the lid to be pres¬ sed out into the outer container. Such a spring may be especially advantageous if the pressure in the outer con¬ tainer is considerably higher than the pressure in the small receptacle. When the lid is pushed up - which will give the sound of a small crack - the container is to be shaken thoroughly to mix the two liquids. The loose lid 24 and the optionally loose spring 30 will contribute to
( _. σMPI a careful mixing, these loose parts having a stirring effect.
In the further embodiment according to the invention, shown in Fig. 3 a grip at the end of the rod 22 may be shaped as a tray cap or bottom cap 52. This cap replac¬ es the ring 42 shown in Fig. 1. The cap 52 has a dia¬ meter of such a size that it can only just slide on the outside of the container 10. The cap comprises a cen¬ trally located, axially extending pin 54, which is capable of being connected to the rod 22 in such a man¬ ner that the rod 22 may be turned clear of the lid 24 by turning the cap 52. This may be obtained in many ways; the central pin 54 of the cap may e.g. at the end be con¬ structed as a Parker's screwdriver or as an ordinary flat screwdriver fitting into corresponding recesses in the end 28a of the rod 22, or the rod 22 may be connec¬ ted to the pin 54 by means of a thread oppositely direc¬ ted in relation to the thread in the upper end of the lid 24, so that a turning-in of the cap 52 causes a turning-out of the lid 24, cf. Fig. 3. The tray cap allows the container to be left upright standing on said cap.
In a further embodiment according to the invention and almost like the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the rod 22 and the lid 24 are neither provided with a thread nor with a bajonet socket. The rod 22 is only to be pressed into the container 10 by pressing the projecting end of the rod against a hard object. Thereby the lid 24 is pressed off the inserted receptacle 12, and the two products may be mixed.
