Abstract
The method comprises the cross-linking or bridging of organic chains of a molecular conductor crystalline compound having the formula (TMTSF)2X (TMTSF : tetramethyl-tetraselenafulvalen) or ([di- DELTA <2,2'>-bi-4.5 dimethyl-1,3-diselenole-hexafluorophosphate]), wherein X is selected among the group comprising ClO4, PF6, TaF6, Sb6, AsF6, ReO4, with following atoms of at least one potentially conductor body, for example a metal or a pseudometal, such as gold, silver, aluminum, lead, indium, antimony. The cross-linking is effected by diffusion of said atoms in the crystalline substrate or by contact at the end of the chains. Hence, there are obtained tridimensional superconductor compounds up to 30<o>K, that is to say compounds which may operate in liquid hydrogen. Application particularly to Josephson effect devices.

The present invention relates to superconductive compounds and, more particularly, to a method of increasing the critical superconducting temperature in quasi-unidiπieπsioπnels organic superconductive compounds and the organic superconductive compounds thus obtained.
The properties of superconductivity presented by certain bodies at very low temperatures and observed for the first time, in this case on mercury, in 191 by Kamerlingh-Onnes, were recently revealed to exist in organic compounds based on carbon, hydrogen and selenium. This discovery, which is to be credited to the team to which the inventors of the present application belong, was the subject of a communication to the Academy of Sciences in Paris on January 14, 1980, published in the Journa de Physique-Lettres Tomes 290, 1980, series B pages 27 to 30, the content of which and the bibliography are included here for reference.
This publication refers to the existence of superconduction at very low temperature (below 1 ° K) in an organic conductor (TMTSF) 2 X where X = PF 6 , [di-Δ 2 '2' -bi-4.5dimethyl- 1, 3-diselenol-hexafluorophosphate] in crystalline form obtained by an electrochemical technique from ultrapure constituents. The compounds (TMTSF) 2 X have, in the form of single crystals a structure formed of chains of stacked organic molecules, the X ions being intercalated in columns between the organic chains, as represented in FIG. 1 (where X represents PF 6 -). This structure has an axis of strong conduction (vertical in the representation of FIG. 1) making it possible to qualify them under the name of "molecular conductors with quasi-one-dimensional transport property" (QID).
By studying the compounds of this class, it was found that, while the critical temperature below which a state of zero resistance is established is of the order of T Cэ = 1 ° K, precursory signs of superconductivity , qualified as "supraconductive fluctuations" can be observed in a range, of temperatures extending up to 40 ° K. Figure 2 establishes a comparison between the thermal variations of the resistance of a common superconductive metal (curve I) (in this case lead) at low temperature and that of a quasi-one-dimensional QID conductor of the type considered (curve II). The low resistance and high temperature dependence of the QID compound must be rightly attributed to the aforementioned superconductive fluctuations.
We also know that long research has made it possible to develop intermetallic conductors, for example based on Nb, Al, Ge, having a superconductivity up to 23.2 ° K, that is to say with a too small margin compared to the temperature of liquid hydrogen (20 ° K), to consider for their use, to substitute liquid hydrogen for liquid helium, whose numerous disadvantages, (so much cost of manufacturing than storage) are well known to specialists in cryogenic techniques.
There is therefore, in particular because of the wide field of uses envisaged for superconductors, a very marked need for compounds having characteristics of superconductivity at temperatures higher than that of liquid helium and, better, higher than that of liquid hydrogen. The object of the present invention is precisely to propose a method of increasing the critical superconduction temperature in quasi-one-dimensional organic superconductive compounds in order to make them superconductive well above the usual feritic temperature T C3 for these compounds.
Another object of the present invention is to propose new compounds of the type under consideration having properties of superconductivity in liquid hydrogen. To do this, according to a characteristic of the present invention, the method comprises the step of crosslinking the chains of such a molecular conductive compound with quasi-one-dimensional transport property with foreign atoms of at least one potentially conductive body. According to another characteristic of the present invention, the method comprises the step of diffusing in a com posed (TMTSF) 2 X, where X is chosen from the group comprising C10 4 , PF 6 , TaF 6 , SbF 6 , AsF 6 , ReO 4 , NbF 6 , atoms of metallic or semiconductor bodies. J.M.The inventors have demonstrated that the phenomena of superconductive fluctuations observed below 40 ° K in molecular conductors with a quasi-one-dimensional transport property (QID) result from the appearance, along the chains of organic molecules, of limited superconductive zones. , ephemeral and fluctuating in the form of elongated cigars, of section d 2 (d being the distance between the stacks of chains of organic molecules, and of length ξ, ξ being the length of correlation, and revealing a one-dimensional critical temperature T C1 very broadly higher than the three-dimensional critical temperature T C3 . The inventors have indeed demonstrated the existence of a large forbidden energy band at the Fermi level by transition of electrons by tunnel effect in a Schot tky type junction between a compound doped 2 semiconductor, in this case N doped GaSb, deposited in a thin layer on a crystalline substrate of a molecular compound with almost one-dimensional transport property having a thickness of 300 μ. The reference 3 designates a layer of tin, 4 being the electrodes. JM
("Phenomena of tunnel effect in solids", published in 1969 by E. Burstein and S. Lundvist, Plénum Press). With the assembly shown in FIG. 3, a low frequency modulated bias current is applied, the corresponding alternating voltage being measured with a synchronous phase detector. The Resis dynamic tance R = dV / dl of the tunnel junction can thus be determined as a function of the polarization (kept below 20 millivolts). It is noted, under these conditions, the existence of a more or less marked peak in the dV / dl-mV diagram around the zero polarization value, with a band gap 2Δ equal to 3, 6 mV (2Δ being connected to the energy of formation of a pair of superconductive electrons on each chain of molecules).
As previously mentioned, a quasi-one-dimensional superconducting single crystal of the type (TMTSF) 2 X can be considered as a network of chains of weakly coupled organic molecules, the inter-chain coupling being able to be assimilated to a very weak coupling of the Josephson type. This weak coupling is the cause of the low three-dimensional critical temperature T C3 of these compounds (of the order of 1 ° K). In the temperature range between 1 ° K and 40 ° K, the electronic properties of such an organic molecular superconductor can be assimilated to a model of substantially uncoupled quasi-one-dimensional superconducting chains. The inventors therefore set out to try to improve the coupling of the chains, that is to say to establish conductive bridges between them to "freeze" by crosslinking of these chains the pre-superconductivity conditions observed until at 40 ° K in the form of the superconductive fluctuations previously mentioned.
meùrant valables pour les autres familles de composés oùThis crosslinking or bridging to improve the transverse superconductive coupling force has been shown to be achieved by inserting foreign atoms of a potentially metallic or pseudo-metallic body into the chains, which has been effectively demonstrated experimentally with contact. of Schottky represented on figure 4 [contact (TMTSF) 2 PF 6 -GaSb] and reported on figure 5. In a tunnel junction of this type, there normally exists a conventional barrier interface (zones C) from 10 to 30 Angstroms thick establishing a conductor-insulator-superconductor (NIS) contact. However, this barrier re is locally degraded by the diffusion or precipitation of an excess of atoms of the semiconductor compound 2 (in this case Sb atoms) in the superconductive substrate 1, as shown by the hatched areas S in FIG. 4 In these zones, the individual chains of organic molecules TMTSF become more strongly coupled due to the foreign atoms included therein, the normally uni-dimensional character of superconductivity beyond the critical temperature T C3 in these zones then becoming three-dimensional and implying an increase. from the three-dimensional critical temperature T C3 to the level of the one-dimensional critical temperature T C1 . The stabilized three-dimensional superconductive zones in the substrate 1 induce limited superconductive zones in the adjacent semiconductor compound by proximity effect through the weak Schottky insulating barrier. It follows that the quasi-contact zones, such as Q (superconductive-insulator-superconductive-SIS junction) therefore have the Josephson junction characteristics. Figure 5 establishes the curve of the variations of the dynamic resistance of such a junction (TMTSF) 2 PF 6 -GaSb under a pressure of 11 kilobars. It is noted that the contact becomes superconductive below 12 ° K (the residual resistance of the order of 0.02 ohm at very low temperatures corresponding to the resistances in series of the electrode contacts and of the mass of the substrate of molecular conductor organic remaining in the quasi-one-dimensional superconduction configuration, the resistance becoming truly zero below the critical point T C3 The inventors have found that the energy band prohibited at the Fermi level of the compounds (TMTSF) 2 X was not not deeply modified by the nature of the anion X, but that, as a general rule, this forbidden band 2Δ decreased when the applied pressure increased. This forbidden band therefore constitutes an intrinsic property of the organic chains stacked of TMTSF molecules, the experiments carried out with (TMTSF) 2 PF 6 (under very high pressure) valid for other families of compounds where
X, outre PF6, est AsF6, Ta F 6 , SbF6 ReO4, NbF 6 et surtout CIO4, l'anion perchlorate présentant l'énorme avantage de constituer des composés présentant une température critique de supraconduction élevée sous pression ambiante.X, in addition to PF 6 , is AsF 6 , Ta F 6 , SbF 6 ReO 4 , NbF 6 and especially CIO 4 , the perchlorate anion having the enormous advantage of constituting compounds having a critical temperature of high superconduction under ambient pressure.
A partir de cette température, l'effet non linéaire Josephson disparaît brutalement.FIG. 6 thus represents the variations in dynamic resistance of a Schottky contact (TMTSF) 2 ClO 4 -GaSb under ambient pressure and at 8 ° K, with the intermittent application of radio frequency radiation of 50 MHz (in veloppes lower 6 of the peaks) or in the absence of this radio-frequency radiation (upper envelope 7 of the peaks). The radiation consists of pulses of 10 nanoseconds with a period of 20 nanoseconds applied to a resistor arranged in the vicinity of the junction, but without common connection between them. Radio frequency radiation influences the differential resistance for very low voltage areas over a voltage range corresponding to 4Δ = 16 millivolts. These modifications, due to the presence or absence of radio frequency radiation, result from the existence of a superconductive state in the organic chains of the molecular conductor and can be interpreted as a Josephson effect in the evoked SIS zones. further. The junction therefore behaves like a random network of Josephson junctions coupled in parallel, each junction having a superconductive state or resisting with a finite voltage drop. In FIG. 6, the curve corresponds to measurements carried out at a temperature of 8 ° K, FIG. 7 establishing the absence of such variations in differential resistance in the absence (7) or in the presence (6) of a radio -frequency of the same frequency for a temperature range up to 30 ° K. From this temperature, the Josephson nonlinear effect suddenly disappears.
It is thus thus demonstrated that, by “crosslinking 'or bridging of the chains of organic molecules, that is to say, within the meaning of the present invention, any conductive contact of metallic type between the chains establishing an easy passage electrons from one chain to another, a three-dimensional superconducting state stabilized up to 30 ° K is reached, i.e. with a temperature margin largely sufficient to use these components in their three-dimensional superconductive state with liquid hydrogen (20 ° K), which was not in practice the case with superconductive in termetallic conductors up to a maximum of 23.2ºK.
More generally, it is therefore possible to obtain an increase in the critical superconduction temperature in quasi-one-dimensional organic superconductors of the type under consideration, by crosslinking the molecular chain stacks by foreign atoms of at least one potentially conductive body. This inclusion of foreign atoms can be easily carried out by diffusion, for example by vacuum evaporation deposition, of foreign atoms, for example of antimony, arsenic, silver, gold, aluminum , lead or indium. Foreign atoms thus diffuse inside the organic crystal between the conductive chains to achieve the desired increase in interchain coupling.
The monocrystals of (TMTSF) 2 X normally crystallize in the form of rigid needles and it has been observed that the same phenomena of Josephson effect and radio frequency effects have been observed on very fine junctions made between an area metal and the ends of organic chains. This metallic end contact ensures sufficient coupling between the initially individually conductive chains to induce a superconductive transition of the chains at a temperature in the region of 30 ° K over a thickness ξ of the order of 100 to 1000 Å. The nature of the contact metal can be arbitrary (molybdenum niobium, tantalum, aluminum, lead, indium, tin, gallium or alloys such as Nb 3 Sn or Nb-Al-Ge alloys). The three-dimensional critical temperature T C3 increases initially with the concentration of conductive atoms ensuring end contact between chains, but reaches a maximum, of the order of T C1 , for a concentration of conductive atoms of the order of 5 at 15%. Thus, according to this other technique, it is therefore possible to envisage carrying out an electrochemical deposition of monocrystals of these compounds on an electrode, for example made of silver, on which foreign atoms have been previously deposited to be diffused, for example by electrochemical deposition or by evaporation. On this first crystalline substrate, with a thickness of the order of 100 to 1000 Å, it is possible to deposit, for example by evaporation, another metal layer of foreign atoms with a thickness of 10 to 50 Å, and so on until the formation of the other electrode by deposition or direct contact of gold, antimony, silver, GaSb, aluminum, lead or indium on the substrate of layers alternating. The organic superconductive chains perpendicular to the surfaces of potentially conducting bodies which supply foreign atoms or form a significant angle with respect to them, see their superconductivity very much improved by diffusion of these foreign atoms on both sides between the chains. adjacent substrates and by coupling between the ends of the chains by the metal layers to stabilize the three-dimensional superconductive crystalline compound with a critical temperature of the order of 29 ° K.
Josephson devices based on these compounds can thus be used in all the intended uses, in general, for Josephson devices, and in particular as detectors or generators in the intermediate zone between microwave and very far infrared (up to 4000 GHz ) where the usual metallic or intermetallic superconductors can no longer function. The superconductive compounds according to the invention can moreover remain superconductive under very high magnetic fields.
