Description

WI HY-NDMAN, Method of Securing Metal Platesto Structures.
j Reissued Feb. 26,1878.
. INVENTDR.
WlTNESSEE 15mm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE! WILLIAM G. YHYNDMAIN, oF'oINor'NNATI, 01110.
IMPROVEMENT IN METHODS OF SECURING METAL PLATES T0 STRUCTURES.
- Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 191,763, dated June-12, 1877; Reissue No. B,l00,'dated Ecbruary26, 1878 application filed September 7, 1877.
I To all whom it may concern..-
.Be it knownthat I, WrLL'rA G. HYNDMAN,
of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and fijsefullmprovements in Method of Securing Metal Plates to Structures; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art tewhioh it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had totlie accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart [of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings 1s a representation of a se'ction of a roof with metal plates conu nected thereto Fig. 2 -isza plan view of the washer. Fig. 3isavertical section of the same,
and Fig.4 is 'a-view of the'nail'used in securing thehetalplatmstotherboforother structur'e. Y
This invention has melation to the means used for'securin g sheet meta'lplatesupon the roofs of-houses and other places where such roofing is required. r
- 'Previous to my invention thegreat difficulty Landobj ection to the fastenings used were the-liability of the metal plates becoming torn, caused ..by"theunevemiess of the sizeof the nail, and the impossibility of forming a perfectly air and water tight joint around the head of the same, also, the ease and liability of the 'nail being withdrawn by the contraction and expansion of the metal.
:The means heretofore emplo ed, which resulted in the above difficulties, were the ordinary cut nail,,havin'g an imperfect head, and
' also,'inconnection therewith, a lead washer.
This'nail, as previously stated, would-cut or tear the iron" in puncturing itsway through,
audit-had such an imperfect head as to make Rig-impossible to form an airfor water-tight joint around the nail-head and nail-hole leaving an aperture'for the waterto penetrate to the ragged edge of the sheetmetal, thereby giving an opportunity for corrosion; and. in
the use ofa washer of soft metal with a nail having so imperfecta head the. pressureof the .under 'side of the ,nailhead upon the washer, wheif the'nail' is driven home, would tear'or splitthe washer, rendering it again imconnection with a washer of soft material.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents-a section of ajroof, and B themetal plates, connected and secured to the roof by the nail O and washer D. The nail O is made from wire drawn out through a gage, so that V the wire will be of uniform thickness throughout, and the nail is barbed or roughened around its shank or body, and has a round head, a, and conical point b. One advantage of such a nailfin securing metal plates to structures is the rapidity with which the sheet-metal plates may be secured to the roof,
the sharp conical point of the nail readily. penetrating the metal without its being necessary to first make the hole with a punch or other similar tool; and a further advantage is obtained in having the point sharp and of conical form, as the point will pass into the wood without tearing the fibers, it merely splitting or separating them, thereby allowing them, after the nail is driven home, to resume their natural position, and intertwine and bracethemse-lves between the proj ecting edges or barbs formed upon the shank or body of the nail, firmly holding it in place.
In driving the nail home, the washer D, being composed of soft material, preferably of lead or othemsoftnietal, accommodates itself to any unevenness of the surface of the metal plate; and the head of the nail .being round, when embedded and incase'd in the soft material composing the washer, will press equally at all points thereon, thereby preventing the possibility ofsplitting it, which has been frequently the case in the use of the square or irregular formed heads of the nails now in use.
Having now-filllydescribed my invention,
