The present invention may best be understood through the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
The present invention will now be described more specifically with reference to the following embodiments. It is to be noted that the following descriptions of preferred embodiments of this invention are presented herein for purpose of illustration and description only; it is not intended to be exhaustive or to be limited to the precise form disclosed.
Please refer to FIG. 1 which is an appearance diagram illustrating a preferred embodiment of an apparatus for taking an electronic message according to the present invention. As shown in FIG. 1 , the size of the electronic message-leaving apparatus, which is called as the electronic messenger hereinafter, is preferably made to be similar to that of a personal digital assistant (PDA) so that it is convenient to be carried by the user and mounted in a proper place. For example, the electronic messenger can be adhered, hung or disposed on the wall, the table, the door, the door of a refrigerator or any other place where the electronic messenger can be easily operated. The electronic messenger includes a message input device for inputting a message therefrom. The message input device, for example, optionally includes a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera 11, a microphone 12, a liquid crystal display (LCD) 13, and/or a digital tablet 14 all accessibly accommodated in a case 10. The CCD camera 11 permits for image input, either for a still picture or a motion picture. The microphone 12 permits for voice input. The LCD 13 may serve as a touch panel for input by pointing one of predetermined selective items on the display. The selected items may be patterns or words or any other suitable forms. The digital table 14 permits for handwriting input. Aside from a message input device as a touch panel, the LCD also serve as a message playing device for presenting the message in a visible form. As for the message in an audible form, it can be presented by an audio message playing device such as a speaker (not shown in FIG. 1 ).
Please refer to FIG. 2A which is a functional block diagram illustrating the electronic message-leaving apparatus of FIG. 1 . For allowing the message given via the message input device shown in FIG. 1 to be presented in front of a receiver, the electronic messenger also includes a digital signal processor (DSP) 20, a memory device 21, and a vibration detector 22 disposed inside the case 10. The digital signal processor 20 is electrically connected to the charge-coupled device camera 11, the microphone 12, the liquid crystal display 13, the memory device 21, the vibration detector 22, and the speaker 23. The memory device 21 is used for storing therein the given message. When the vibration detector 22 detects a vibration level exceeding a predetermined value, the vibration detector 22 sends out a trigger signal to the digital signal processor 20 which allows the image, handwriting, pattern, character andlor voice messages to be read out in response to the trigger signal. Then, the visible message is played on the liquid crystal display 13 and the voice message is broadcasted from the speaker 23. For example, a user left messages in the electronic messenger via at least one of the message input devices and adhered the electronic messenger on the door of a refrigerator. Once the door of the refrigerator is opened, the vibration detector 22 will detect the vibration and send out the trigger signal to allow the electronic messages to be automatically played. Thus, the electronic messenger according to the present invention can actively notify the receiver of the presence and the contents of messages, thereby avoiding important messages being delayed or missed out.
An embodiment of the vibration detector 22 used in the above electronic messenger is a spring-type vibration detector shown in FIG. 2B . As shown in FIG. 2B , a metal stick 24 penetrates through a spiral spring 25. When the spiral spring 25 is vibrated or trembles due to a certain level of vibration, the spiral spring 25 is in contact with the metal stick 24. Therefore, the electricity is conducted, resulting in that the spring-type vibration detector 22 sends out the trigger signal.
In addition, the spring-type vibration detector 22 can be replaced by a mercury-type one. As shown in FIG. 2C , the mercury-type vibration detector includes a container 26 accommodating mercury 27 therein, and two metal conductive wires 28 and 29 inserted into the container 26 and being disposed just above the liquid surface of mercury. When the container 26 is vibrated due to a certain level of vibration, the electrically conductive mercury 27 trembles and becomes in contact with both of the metal conductive wires 28 and 29. Therefore, the electricity is conducted, resulting in that the mercury-type vibration detector sends out the trigger signal.
Moreover, as shown in FIG. 3 , the electronic messenger further includes a button 31 and a timer 32. The receiver can actively check the message by touching or pressing on the button 31. The timer 32 is used to play the message at preset time especially for purpose of reminding, for example, reminding of taking medicine.
For another embodiment as shown in FIG. 4 , the functions and structures of the electronic messenger are similar to those of the electronic messenger of FIG. 3 except that the motion detector is an infrared-ray motion detector 41. The infrared-ray motion detector 41 is connected to the digital signal processor 20 and used for detecting a movement of an environmental object. When the infrared-ray motion detector 41 sends out a trigger signal in response to a certain level of movement, the digital signal processor 20 controls the memory device 21 to send out the image and/or voice messages. Thus, the image and/or voice messages are further played by the liquid crystal display 13 and/or the speaker 23, respectively.
The liquid crystal display used in the above embodiments can be a thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFTLCD), a color super twisted nematic liquid crystal display (color STNLCD) or a monochrome super twisted nematic liquid crystal display (monochrome STNLCD).
The charge-coupled device camera 11 can be replaced by a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor. In addition to the digital signal processor, an application specific IC (ASIC) specifically designed for these electronic message-leaving apparatuses can be used as a controller for reducing the cost. Furthermore, all electronic message-leaving apparatus according to the present invention can further include the button 31 and the timer 32 as the embodiment shown in FIG. 3 .
To sum up, the electronic messenger according to the present invention provides a function to actively notify the receiver instead of completely depending on the receiver's attention. Thus, the electronic message from the user won't be missed out or delayed. In addition, the electronic messenger according to the present invention provides a convenient way for some handicapped people to leave or take messages. For example, those who cannot write may leave message by voice input via the microphone, and those who cannot speak may leave message by inputting sign language via the CCD camera. Of course, an indicator light or sound may be additionally provided to notify of the playing of the message. Further, the electronic messenger according to the present invention provides a way to transmit the exactly information or emotion from the user to the receiver.
While the invention has been described in terms of what are presently considered to be the most practical and preferred embodiments, it is to be understood that the invention need not be limited to the disclosed embodiment. On the contrary, it is intended to cover various modifications and similar arrangements included within the spirit and scope of the appended claims which are to be accorded with the broadest interpretation so as to encompass all such modifications and similar structures.
