Description

CROSS REFERENCE TO A RELATED APPLICATION
This application claims priority to European Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) Plant Breeder's Rights Application No. 2024/2812 filed on Nov. 27, 2024, the entire contents of which is incorporated by reference herein.
Botanical classification: Clematis patens X viticella.
Variety denomination: ‘EviGsy155’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Clematis of hybrid origin and will be referred to hereafter by its cultivar name ‘EviGsy155’. ‘EviGsy155’ is grown as an herbaceous climbing plant for use in the landscape or as a flowering potted plant for the terrace.
‘EviGsy155’ derived from an ongoing breeding program by the Inventor at his nursery in Guernsey, The Channel Islands. The goal of the breeding program is to select new cultivars of Clematis with a compact plant habits with an abundance of flowers that are large in size with unique flower colors and exhibit blooming from base to tip and repeat blooming. ‘EviGsy155’ was selected as a single unique plant in April of 2020 and arose from a controlled cross made in June of 2015 between unnamed and unpatented proprietary seedlings of Clematis patens X viticella from the Inventor's breeding program as both the female and male parents.
Asexual propagation of the new cultivar was first accomplished by stem cuttings under the direction of the Inventor in Guernsey, The Channel Islands in May of 2020. Asexual propagation by internodal stem cuttings has determined that the characteristics of the new cultivar are stable and are reproduced true to type in successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘EviGsy155’ as a unique cultivar of Clematis.
    • 1. ‘EviGsy155’ exhibits flowers that are large in size.
    • 2. ‘EviGsy155’ exhibits flowers that open purple-pink in color and mature to deep pink in color with red anthers.
    • 3. ‘EviGsy155’ exhibits flowers present from the base to the tip of the plant.
    • 4. ‘EviGsy155’ exhibits repeat flowering; blooming from May through July and re-blooming in September.
    • 5. ‘EviGsy155’ exhibits a compact plant habit.
    • 6. ‘EviGsy155’ exhibits a floriferous blooming habit.
    • 7. ‘EviGsy155’ exhibits good suitability for use in gardens and in containers.
The female parent of ‘EviGsy155’ differs from ‘EviGsy155’ in having a taller plant height and light purple tepals. The male parent of ‘EviGsy155’ differs from ‘EviGsy155’ in having a less vigorous plant habit and light purple tepals. ‘EviGsy155’ can be most closely compared to the Clematis cultivars ‘evipo077’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 29,150) and ‘evipo041’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 24,171). Both ‘evipo077’ and ‘evipo041’ are similar to ‘EviGsy155’ in overall flower color. ‘evipo077’ differs from ‘EviGsy155’ in having in having a more vigorous growth and taller plant height and longer tepals that are light pink with a darker pink center stripe, and brown anthers. ‘evipo041’ differs from ‘EviGsy155’ in having bi-colored flowers with tepals that are more purple in color with darker pink center stripes and leaflets that are thinner and more lanceolate in shape.
