Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Coreopsis plant named ‘Baluptold’, characterized by its upright and mounded plant habit; moderately vigorous growth habit; freely branching habit; medium green-colored leaves; freely flowering habit with numerous inflorescences per plant; single-type daisy inflorescences with bright yellow-colored ray florets; and good garden performance.
Description
Botanical designation: Coreopsis hybrida.
Cultivar denomination: ‘BALUPTOLD’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Coreopsis plant, commonly referred to as Tickseed, botanically known as Coreopsis hybrida, and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Baluptold’.
The new Coreopsis plant is a naturally-occurring whole plant mutation of Coreopsis hybrida ‘Baluptgonz’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 28,882. The new Coreopsis plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant from within a population of plants of ‘Baluptgonz’ in a controlled environment in Castalia, Ohio on Jun. 22, 2021.
Asexual reproduction of the new Coreopsis plant by vegetative cuttings in controlled environments in Castalia, Ohio and West Chicago, Illinois since June 2021 has shown that the unique features of this new Coreopsis plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
Plants of the new Coreopsis have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Baluptold’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Baluptold’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Coreopsis plant:

- 1. Upright and mounded plant habit.
- 2. Moderately vigorous growth habit.
- 3. Freely branching habit.
- 4. Medium green-colored leaves.
- 5. Freely flowering habit with numerous inflorescences per plant.
- 6. Single-type daisy inflorescences with bright yellow-colored ray florets.
- 7. Good garden performance.
Plants of the new Coreopsis differ primarily from plants of the mutation parent, ‘Baluptgonz’ in ray floret color as ray florets of inflorescences of plants of the new Coreopsis are bright yellow in color whereas ray florets of inflorescences of plants of ‘Baluptgonz’ are medium golden yellow and orange red bi-colored. In addition, plants of the new Coreopsis are not as vigorous as plants of ‘Baluptgonz’.
Plants of the new Coreopsis can be compared to Coreopsis hybrida ‘Baluptowed’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 28,865. Plants of the new Coreopsis differ primarily from plants of ‘Baluptowed’ in ray floret color as ray florets of inflorescences of plants of the new Coreopsis are bright yellow in color whereas ray florets of inflorescences of plants of ‘Baluptowed’ are yellow and burgundy red bi-colored. In addition, inflorescences of plants of the new Coreopsis have fewer ray florets than inflorescences of plants of ‘Baluptowed’.
The accompanying photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Coreopsis plant. The photographs show the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Coreopsis plant.

The photograph on the second sheet (FIG. 2 ) is a close-up view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Baluptold’.
The aforementioned photographs and following observations and measurements describe plants grown in 10-cm containers in a polyethylene-covered greenhouse in West Chicago, Illinois during the late winter and early spring and under cultural practices similar to those used in commercial Coreopsis plant production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures averaged 25° C. and night temperatures averaged 10° C. Plants were pinched twice and were twelve weeks old when the photographs and description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, Sixth Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. Measurements represent averages for typical flowering plants.

- Time to initiate roots.—About ten to twelve days at temperatures about 21° C.
- Time to produce a rooted young plant.—About five to six weeks at temperatures about 21° C.
- Root description.—Fine, fibrous; typically white in color, actual color of the roots is dependent on substrate composition, water quality, fertilizer type and formulation, substrate temperature and physiological age of roots.
