Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Hydrangea plant named ‘SMNHAGOV’ is disclosed, characterized by large, abundant mophead inflorescences. Sepals open pale white-green, then mature to pure white. Stems are strong and thick, supporting large flower panicles. The new variety is a Hydrangea, typically produced as an outdoor ornamental plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Hydrangea arborescens.
Variety denomination: ‘SMNHAGOV’.
The new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, to produce new Hydrangea arborescens with heavy flowering, white sepals, compact habits and strong stems. The open pollination resulting in the new cultivar was made in summer of 2018 at a nursery in Grand Haven, Michigan.
The seed parent is the cultivar Hydrangea arborescens ‘NCHA5’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 30,296. The pollen parent is unknown. The new cultivar was found and selected by the inventor in summer of 2019 at the same nursery in Grand Haven, Michigan. Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘SMNHAGOV’ was first performed during the summer of 2019 in Grand Haven, Michigan, by softwood cuttings. Through subsequent propagation, multiple additional generations have been reproduced, having shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.
The cultivar ‘SMNHAGOV’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘SMNHAGOV’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘SMNHAGOV’ as a new and distinct Hydrangea cultivar:
-
- 1. Flower sepals which open pale white-green and mature to pure white.
- 2. Large panicle size.
- 3. Heavily flowering; superior flower coverage.
- 4. Strong, thick stems which support large flower panicles without “flopping.”
- 5. Dark green foliage; large globose leaves.
- 6. Compact, upright habit.
Plants of ‘SMNHAGOV’ are similar to plants of the seed parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of ‘SMNHAGOV’ differ in the following:
-
- 1. Plants of the new cultivar are larger at maturity than plants of the seed parent.
- 2. Flower sepals of the new cultivar open pale white-green and mature to pure white. Flower sepals of the seed parent open very light pink and mature to white.
- 3. The new cultivar flowers earlier than the seed parent.
- 4. Growth habit of the new cultivar is weeping/cascading, while the growth habit of the seed parent is upright.
Plants of ‘SMNHAGOV’ can be compared to plants of the commercial cultivar Hydrangea arborescens ‘Abetwo’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 20,571. Plants of ‘SMNHAGOV’ are similar to plants of ‘Abetwo’ in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of ‘SMNHAGOV’ differ in the following:
-
- 1. Panicle diameter of the new cultivar is slightly smaller, but plant exhibits more flower coverage overall are medium sized. Panicle diameter of this comparator is slightly larger, but plant exhibits less flower coverage overall.
- 2. Stems of the new cultivar are stronger and more rigid than stems of this comparator.
Plants of the new cultivar Hydrangea ‘SMNHAGOV’ can be compared to the commercial cultivar Hydrangea arborescens ‘BAlful’, unpatented. Plants of ‘SMNHAGOV’ are similar to plants of ‘BAlful’ in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of ‘SMNHAGOV’ differ in the following:
-
- 1. Panicles of the new cultivar are larger than panicles of this comparator.
- 2. Stems of the new cultivar are stronger and more rigid than stems of this comparator.
- 3. Plants of the new cultivar have superior resistance to the elements, while plants of this comparator have inferior resistance to the elements.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a top view of a typical plant of ‘SMNHAGOV’ grown in a field in Grand Haven, Michigan. This plant is approximately 5 years old.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2015, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘SMNHAGOV’ plants grown outdoors in Grand Haven, Michigan. The plants were about 5 years old. Temperatures ranged from 5° C. to 10° C. at night to 18° C. to 27° C. during the day. No artificial light, photoperiodic treatments were given to the plants. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
