Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of floribunda Rose plant named ‘ALTsunflower’ is disclosed, characterized by distinctive fully double light yellow flowers with a strong tea rose fragrance. Plants are vigorous and can be grown on their own roots. Plants are compact, semi-upright, flower continuously, and exhibit good resistance to blackspot diseases. The new variety is normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Rosa hybrida.
Variety denomination: ‘ALTsunflower’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The new Rosa cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Peter Lim. The objective of the breeding program was to produce vigorous new garden rose varieties with continuous blooming for ornamental commercial applications. The cross resulting in this new variety was made Jun. 9, 2014.
The seed parent is the variety Rosa ‘MACrexy’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 6,713. The pollen parent is the variety Rosa ‘BAline’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 16,659. The new variety was selected in July of 2015 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2014 crossing, in a nursery in Vista, California.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar has been performed by vegetative cuttings. This was first performed at a research greenhouse in Vista, California in June 2015 and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in more than 5 successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The cultivar ‘ALTsunflower’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘ALTsunflower’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘ALTsunflower’ as a new and distinct Rosa cultivar:
    • 1. Compact, bushy floribunda rose.
    • 2. Double yellow flower with on average 30 petals.
    • 3. Early blooming compared to other commercial yellow roses.
    • 4. Continuous flowering.
    • 5. Dark glossy foliage resistant to black spot and powdery mildew disease.
    • 6. Plants can be grown on their own roots; grafting is not required.
PARENT COMPARISONS
Plants of the new cultivar ‘ALTsunflower’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘ALTsunflower’ differ in the following:
    • 1. Flower color of the new cultivar is light yellow, while flower color of the seed parent is pink.
    • 2. Flowers of the new cultivar have fewer petals than flowers of the seed parent.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘ALTsunflower’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘ALTsunflower’ differs in the following;
    • 1. Flower color of the new variety is a lighter yellow than flower color of the pollen parent.
COMMERCIAL COMPARISONS
Plants of the new cultivar ‘ALTsunflower’ can be compared to the commercial variety Rosa ‘HARflow’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 10,478. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics, however ‘ALTsunflower’ differs in the following:
    • 1. Flower color of the new variety is light yellow, while flower color of this comparator is orange-yellow.
    • 2. Flowers of the new variety are smaller than flowers of this comparator.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘ALTsunflower’ can also be compared to the commercial variety Rosa ‘KORresia’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 3,509. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics, however ‘ALTsunflower’ differs in the following:
    • 1. Plants of the new variety are not as tall as plants of this comparator.
    • 2. Flowers of the new variety have more petals than flowers of this comparator.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a close up of an individual flower of ‘ALTsunflower’ on a plant of approximately 2-years old.
FIG. 2 is a plant of ‘ALTsunflower’, photographed in April in Southern California, showing plant form and foliage at approximately 2.5 years.
FIG. 3 is a close-up view of the foliage of the new variety.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2007 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
