Abstract
A new Begonia plant named ‘BEYZ0001’ particularly distinguished by its rounded, compact and symmetrical habit, double flowers that are soft deep pink in color with very dark mahogany glossy foliage. ‘BEYZ0001’ blooms continually from early spring onward and has freely produced basal and lateral branching.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Begonia hybrida.
Varietal denomination: ‘BEYZ0001’.
The present invention comprises a new Begonia plant, botanically known as Begonia hybrida and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘BEYZ0001’. ‘BEYZ0001’ is a product of a planned breeding program in Whitecourt, Alberta Canada. The new cultivar ‘BEYZ0001’ has rounded, compact and symmetrical habit, double flowers that are soft deep pink in color with very dark mahogany glossy foliage. ‘BEYZ0001’ blooms continually from early spring onward and has freely produced basal and lateral branching.
The new Begonia cultivar, ‘BEYZ0001’, is the result of a planned pollination and was made in Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada at the inventor's nursery in the month of August 2018.
The female parent of the new cultivar is the unnamed pink Begonia seedling, not patented, characterized by its larger flowers and leaves. ‘BEYZ0001’ differs from the female parent by having a smaller flower. The male parent of the new cultivar is an unnamed, unpatented seedling of the inventor's internal lines, having a smaller white flower and many lateral branches with smaller overall size than ‘BEYZ0001’.
The resulting seed was sown in Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada in a controlled greenhouse environment in 2018 and ‘BEYZ0001’ was selected as one flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in 2019.
The first act of asexual reproduction of ‘BEYZ0001’ was accomplished when vegetative stem cuttings were propagated from the initial selection in May 2019 in Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada.
Plants of the new Begonia have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
A Plant Breeder's Right for this cultivar has not yet been applied for. ‘BEYZ0001’ has not been made publicly available prior to the effective filing date of this application, notwithstanding any disclosure that may have been made less than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application by the inventor or another who obtained directly from the inventor.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be basic characteristics of the new variety. The combination of these characteristics distinguishes this Begonia as a new and distinct variety.
The accompanying photographic drawings show typical flower and foliage characteristics of ‘BEYZ0001’ with colors being as true as possible with an illustration of this type.
The photographic drawings show in FIG. 1 a close view of an inflorescence taken in Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada in September 2019 and
in FIG. 2 a whole flowering plant taken in Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada in September 2019. The age of the plants depicted in FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 are 24 weeks old.
The plant descriptions and measurements were taken in 2023 in Whitecourt, Alberta, Canada. The plants were approximately 6 months old and were growing in 8 inch pots, one plant per pot, in a greenhouse.
Color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart (R.H.S.) 2001.
