Abstract

A new and distinct Pelargonium plant having single, pink flowers with a large, red eye and a compact habit.

Description

Botanical classification: Pelargonium zonale x P. peltatum interspecific hybrid.
Varietal denomination: ‘PacPX15505’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention comprises a new and distinct Pelargonium variety having the varietal name ‘PacPX15505’ and a botanical classification of Pelargonium zonale x P. peltatum interspecific hybrid. The new variety was discovered and selected in a planned breeding program in Dresden, Germany in the spring of 2015. The purpose of the breeding program was to develop interspecific Pelargoniums with bicolored flowers and moderate growth. The new variety is the result of crossing a bulk of different genotypes in the summer of 2014 in Dresden, Germany to obtain the applied-for variety. As such, the true parentage is unknown. The new variety was first asexually reproduced in January of 2016 by cuttings in Dresden, Germany. The new variety has been trial and field tested and has been found to retain its distinctive characteristics and remain true to type through successive propagations.
The new variety is similar to ‘Pactiopisl’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 33,316) in having a mounded plant shape and basal branching with pink flowers. However, ‘Pactiopisl’ is more vigorous and has a less distinct flower pattern than the new variety. The following characteristics further distinguish the new variety from other Pelargonium varieties known to the breeder:
    • Early and high flowering;
    • Single, pink flowers with a large, red eye;
    • Compact and uniform growth habit.
DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
The accompanying photographic drawing illustrates the new variety at approximately 4 months of age, with the color being as nearly true as is possible with color illustrations of this type.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT
The following detailed description sets forth the characteristics of the new cultivar. The data which defines these characteristics was collected from asexual reproductions and carried out in a greenhouse from spring through fall in Thiendorf, Germany. The new variety was grown in a 19.0 cm pot, with treatment of Cycocel® 720 0.2% two times, and no pinching or photoperiodic treatments. The average day temperatures were 18° C. and the average night temperatures were 16° C. The readings and measurements were taken on plants at approximately 8-9 months of age under a light level of 15-100 klux. Color references are primarily to the 1995 edition of the R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society of London, except where terms of ordinary color significance are used.
