Abstract
The new Heuchera plant named ‘Grateful Gathering’ has medium-sized, shallowly-dissected, palmate leaves with cordate bases. The leaves are chartreuse when young and develop to light gold to chartreuse in color. The small campanulate flowers have white reflexed petals displayed on stiff, erect, tightly branched stems. The new plant has a vigorous growth and sturdy plant habit and is useful in the garden landscape or in containers.
Description
Botanical classification: Heuchera villosa.
Cultivar designation: ‘Grateful Gathering’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Coral Bells plant of hybrid origin, botanically known as Heuchera ‘Grateful Gathering’ and is hereinafter referred to by its cultivar name ‘Grateful Gathering’.
The new cultivar was discovered as a chance uninduced sport of Heuchera ‘Caramel’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 16,560 in a nursery garden by the Inventor in Lowell, Ind. in the late spring of 2006. The sport was observed for many years, propagated and tested for uniformity and observed for several more years. The new plant has not been sold anywhere in the world nor disclosed to the public in any way.
Asexual propagation of the new cultivar was first accomplished under the direction of the Inventor by crown division initiated in the fall of 2006 in Lowell, Ind. Examination of asexually propagated plants of ‘Grateful Gathering’ has determined that the characteristics of the new cultivar are stable and are reproduced true to type in successive generations.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘Grateful Gathering’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Heuchera:
-
- 1. Medium-sized, shallowly-dissected, palmate foliage with cordate base;
- 2. Foliage that is variably light gold to chartreuse in color;
- 3. Erect, stiff, tightly branched flower stems;
- 4. Small campanulate flowers with white reflexed petals;
- 5. Exhibits vigorous growth with sturdy plant habit;
‘Grateful Gathering’ can be most closely compared to the Heuchera cultivars: ‘Amber Waves’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 13,348), ‘TNHEUCHA’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 27,567), ‘Toffee Tart’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 33,694) and ‘Ginger Ale’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 18,173).
‘Amber Waves’ has foliage that is more dissected, more ruffled, and orangish-colored, with peduncles that are more reddish-orange. ‘TNHEUCHA’ (more commonly known as ‘Champagne’) has more peachy-colored foliage and the peduncles and pedicels are more greyed-red. ‘Toffee Tart’ has foliage that is more ginger-colored. ‘Ginger Ale’ differs from ‘Grateful Gathering’ in having foliage that is smaller in size, more dissected, more cinnamon-colored with lighter cream between the veins early in the season, the flowers are more chartreuse, and the peduncles and pedicels are more reddish.
‘Caramel’ has foliage that emerges greyed-orange-colored and develops to golden chartreuse, and the peduncles are more greyed-reddish-colored.
The accompanying color photographs illustrate the overall appearance and distinct characteristics of the new Heuchera. The photographs were taken of two-year-old plants grown outdoors in a trial garden and in containers in a partially shaded greenhouse in Lowell, Ind. with the flower photographs taken of a three-year-old plant grown in a trial garden in Zeeland, Mich. The colors in the photographs are as close as possible given the current digital photography techniques available. The color values cited in the detailed botanical description accurately describe the colors of the new Heuchera.
The photograph in FIG. 1 provides a side view of the plant of ‘Grateful Gathering’ prior to flowering.
The photograph in FIG. 2 provides a view of an inflorescence of ‘Grateful Gathering’.
The photograph in FIG. 3 provides a close-up of the middle branches of the stem showing flowers and buds.
The photograph in FIG. 4 provides a close-up view of the foliage of ‘Grateful Gathering’ at flowering.
The photograph in FIG. 5 provides a comparison of ‘Caramel’ (top) and ‘Grateful Gathering’ (bottom).
The following is a detailed description of three-year-old plants of the new cultivar as grown outdoors in a partially shaded trial garden in Zeeland, Mich. and Lowell, Ind. The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, as it has not been tested under all possible environmental conditions. The color determination is in accordance with “The 2015 Colour Chart” of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
