Abstract
A new and distinct Echinacea plant named ‘TNECHSS’ characterized by a large number of medium inflorescences starting in the first season, very long bloom time with excellent rebloom, a very upright, very compact habit, novel red and green ray florets held horizontally surrounding dark cones, strong upright stems, and excellent vigor.
Description
Botanical denomination: Echinacea spp.
Variety designation: ‘TNECHSS’.
Trademark designation: Sweet Sandia.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Echinacea and given the cultivar name ‘TNECHSS’. Echinacea is in the family Asteraceae. The new cultivar is part of a planned breeding program for a container and garden series with compact habits and profuse inflorescences. The exact parents of this selection are unknown, unnamed, proprietary interspecific hybrids bred from Echinacea paradoxa, Echinacea purpurea, and Echinacea tennesseensis.
Compared to Echinacea ‘TNECHKR’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 28,768), the new cultivar is shorter and has green and red ray florets.
This new Echinacea cultivar is uniquely distinguished by:
-
- 1. A very large number of green and red ray florets,
- 2. very long bloom time with excellent rebloom,
- 3. very upright, very compact habit,
- 4. ray florets held horizontally,
- 5. strong upright stems, and
- 6. excellent vigor.
This new cultivar has been reproduced only by asexual propagation (cuttings and tissue culture). Each of the progeny exhibits identical characteristics to the original plant. Asexual propagation by division and tissue culture using standard micropropagation techniques with terminal and lateral shoots, as done in Canby, Oreg., shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations. The present invention has not been evaluated under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary with variations in environment without a change in the genotype of the plant.
The following is a detailed description of the new Echinacea cultivar based on observations of 9-month-old specimens growing in the trial bed in full sun in Canby, Oreg. Canby is in Zone 8 on the USDA Hardiness map. Temperatures range from a high of 95° F. in August to an average of 32° F. in January. Normal rainfall in Canby is 42.8 inches per year in the trial fields in Canby, Oreg. The color descriptions are all based on The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 5th edition, 2007.
