Abstract
A new and distinct Tecoma cultivar named ‘TEC14004’ is disclosed, characterized by a compact growth habit and early flowering. Plants flower abundantly, produces large quantities of small flowers orange-red and yellow-orange flowers. The new variety is an Tecoma, normally produced as an outdoor garden or container plant.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Tecoma fulva.
Variety denomination: ‘TEC14004’.
The new Tecoma cultivar is a product of a controlled breeding program. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new Tecoma varieties with a compact plant habit and early flowering for ornamental commercial applications. The cross resulting in this new variety was made in March of 2013. The seed parent is an unpatented, proprietary variety of Tecoma fulva referred to as ‘TEC12021’. The pollen parent is an unnamed, unpatented variety of Tecoma fulva. The selection of this new variety was made at a nursery in Bolzano, Italy during September of 2014.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘TEC14004’ was first performed in November of 2014 at a nursery in Bolzano, Italy. Vegetative terminal cuttings were used. Subsequent propagation has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
Date of first publication Nov. 1, 2019, occurring in Italy. This publication was made directly by the inventor, on his company's website. This disclosure falls within the exception allowed under 102(b)(1).
The cultivar ‘TEC14004’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘TEC14004’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘TEC14004’ as a new and distinct Tecoma cultivar:

- 1. Compact growth habit.
- 2. Early flowering.
- 3. More flowers than known varieties.
- 4. Smaller flowers than known varieties.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘TEC14004’ are similar to plants of the seed parent variety in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘TEC14004’ differ in the following;

- 1. The new variety has a compact growth habit; the seed parent has a medium/moderate growth habit.
- 2. Flowers of the new variety are smaller than flowers of the seed parent.
- 3. Plants of the new variety begin flowering earlier than plants of the seed parent.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘TEC14004’ are similar to plants of the pollen parent variety in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘TEC14004’ differ in the following;

- 1. The new variety produces orange flowers, flowers of the pollen parent are red.
- 2. Flowers of the new variety are larger than flowers of the pollen parent.
- 3. Plants of the new variety begin flowering earlier than plants of the pollen parent.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘TEC14004’ can be compared to the variety Tecoma ‘Orange Jubilee’, unpatented. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics however, ‘TEC14004’ differs in the following:

- 1. Plants of the new variety are smaller and more compact than plants of this comparator.
- 2. Petals of the new variety have an undulating margin not found on flowers of this comparator.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a plant of ‘TEC14004’ during the Summer grown outdoors, at approximately 2 years old in a 2 gallon pot.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2015, 6th edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘TEC14004’ plants grown in a polyhouse in Grand Haven, Mich. Measurements were taken during Summer. The plants were about 2.5 years old in 3-gallon containers. The growing temperature ranged from approximately 18° C. to 27° C. during the day and 5° C. to 10° C. at night. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.

- Time to produce a rooted young plant: About 8 weeks at approximately 18 to 27° C.

- Growth habit: Upright, somewhat outwardly spreading.
- Pot size of plant described: 3-gallon pot.
