Abstract
A new and distinct Caryopteris cultivar named ‘SMCIPG’ is disclosed, characterized by attractive yellow-green foliage improved hardiness and a compact growth habit. The new variety is a Caryopteris, normally used for ornamental horticulture purposes.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Caryopteris incana.
Variety denomination: ‘SMCIPG’.
The new Caryopteris cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Timothy D. Wood, in Grand Haven, Mich. The objective of the breeding program was to produce improved, more cold-hardy Caryopteris varieties for ornamental commercial applications. The open pollination resulting in this new variety was made during August of 2005.
The seed parent is the commercial variety referred to as Caryopteris ‘Jason’. The pollen parent is unknown as it was an open pollination breeding program. The new variety was selected July of 2013 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2005 open pollination, in a seedling trial field in Grand Haven, Mich.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was performed by softwood cuttings. This was first performed at Spring Meadow Nursery in Grand Haven, Mich. during July of 2013 and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in 4 successive generations. First public access to plants of the variety occurred Feb. 12, 2018 in the United States. This offer came directly or indirectly from the inventor, qualifying for the exception allowed under 102(b). Previous to this sale, although the variety may have been publicized in print, plants were not available to the public for propagation.
The cultivar ‘SMCIPG’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘SMCIPG’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘SMCIPG’ as a new and distinct Caryopteris cultivar:
-
- 1. Yellow-green foliage.
- 2. Compact growth habit.
- 3. Violet flowers.
- 4. Excellent container performance.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘SMCIPG’ are similar to plants of the unpatented seed parent, Caryopteris ‘Jason’ in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘SMCIPG’ differ in the following;
-
- 1. New cultivar has better winter cold hardiness.
- 2. New variety is more compact in plant habit.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘SMCIPG’ are comparable to the patented commercial variety Caryopteris ‘Janice’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,160. The two Caryopteris varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, the new variety ‘SMCIPG’ differs in the following:
-
- 1. Comparator is more compact in habit.
- 2. New variety has yellow-green foliage, while the comparator has yellow foliage.
- 3. New variety is longer lived than this comparator.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical mature plant of ‘SMCIPG’ grown outdoors in Grand Haven, Mich. with emerging foliage in the Spring. Age of the plant photographed is approximately 2 years old from a rooted cutting.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2015 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘SMCIPG’ plants grown in a poly house during July of 2017 in Grand Haven, Mich. The growing temperature ranged from approximately 18° C. to 27° C. during the day and from approximately 5° C. to 10° C. during the night. General light conditions are normal sunlight and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
