Abstract
A new and distinct Pieris japonica cultivar named ‘FARROWPJRF’ is disclosed, characterized by intense, long-lasting pink flower color. Plants are compact and dense. The new cultivar is a Pieris, suitable for ornamental garden purposes.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species: Pieris japonica.
Variety denomination: ‘FARROWPJRF’.
The new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program by the inventor, Michael Farrow. The objective of this program was to produce improved flower colors, and compact, refined plant growth habits. The open pollination was conducted in 2004 at a nursery in Earleville, Md. This new variety, hereinafter referred to as ‘FARROWPJRF’, was discovered and selected at the same nursery in Earleville, Md. during 2008. The female parent is Pieris japonica ‘Dorothy Wyckoff’, unpatented. The male parent is unidentified.
After identifying the new variety as a potentially interesting selection, softwood cuttings were taken at the nursery in Earleville, Md., then taken to a commercial nursery in Grand Haven, Mich. for rooting in 2008. The inventor continued controlled testing and propagation, assessing stability of the unique characteristics of this variety. Ten generations have been reproduced and have shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type. First public access to plants of the variety occurred during August of 2018 in the United States. This offer came directly or indirectly from the inventor, qualifying for the exception allowed under 102(b). Previous to this sale, although the variety may have been publicized in print, plants were not available to the public for propagation.
The cultivar ‘FARROWPJRF’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype. The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘FARROWPJRF’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘FARROWPJRF’ as a new and distinct Pieris japonica cultivar:

- 1. Intense pink flower color.
- 2. Long lasting flower color.
- 3. Compact and dense plants.
Plants of the new variety of Pieris japonica ‘FARROWPJRF’ are similar to plants of the seed parent variety of Pieris japonica ‘Dorothy Wyckoff’, unpatented, in most horticultural characteristics; however, plants of ‘FARROWPJRF’ differ in the following:

- 1. New cultivar has intense pink flowers; seed parent has pale pink to white flowers.
‘FARROWPJRF’ can be compared to the commercial variety Pieris japonica ‘Valley Valentine’, unpatented. The varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of ‘FARROWPJRF’ differ in the following ways:

- 1. New variety's flowers are an intense pink color; comparator has light red flowers.
- 2. New cultivar is a denser plant than this comparator.
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘FARROWPJRF’ in a 3 gallon container grown during Summer in Grand Haven, Mich. in a polyhouse. Plants in FIG. 1 are approximately 2 to 3 years old.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2015 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘FARROWPJRF’ plants grown in a poly greenhouse during Summer, in Grand Haven, Mich. USA. The growing temperature ranged from 18° C. to 27° C. during the day and from 5° C. to 10° C. during the night. General light conditions are natural sunlight. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.

- Typical method: Softwood cuttings.
- Time to initiate rooting: 7 to 9 weeks at approximately 10° C.
- Root description: Fibrous, thin, moderately dense, moderately well branched. Colored white to light brown, not accurately measured with an R.H.S. chart.
- Age of plant described: 2-3 years.
- Container size of plant described: 3-gallon pot.
- Growth habit: Upright evergreen flowering shrub.
- Height: 50 cm.
- Plant spread: 60 cm.
- Pinching required: Some.
