Abstract

A new cultivar of Rubus plant named ‘JdeBoer19’ that is characterized by its fruit production on primocanes, its compact plant habit, its abundance of fruit with a sweet taste, and its canes with minimal thorns.

Description

Botanical classification: Rubus idaeus.

Cultivar designation: ‘JdeBoer19’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Rubus idaeus named ‘JdeBoer19’ and will be referred to hereinafter by its cultivar name, ‘JdeBoer19’. ‘JdeBoer19’ represents a new cultivar of raspberry plant grown for fruit production.

‘JdeBoer19’ was discovered by the Inventor as a chance seedling in 2010 in the Inventor's garden in Boelenslaan, The Netherlands. The parentage is unknown.

Asexual propagation of the new cultivar was first accomplished by the Inventor by stem cuttings in March of 2011 in Boelenslaan, The Netherlands. Asexual propagation of the new cultivar by stem cuttings has shown that the characteristics of the new cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘JdeBoer19’ as a new and unique cultivar of Rubus.

• • 1. ‘JdeBoer19’ exhibits fruit production on primocanes.
  • 2. ‘JdeBoer19’ exhibits a compact plant habit.
  • 3. ‘JdeBoer19’ exhibits an abundance of fruit with a sweet taste.
  • 4. ‘JdeBoer19’ exhibits canes with minimal thorns.

‘JdeBoer19’ can also be to Rubus cultivars ‘Nr7’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,141), ‘Boyne’ (not patented) and ‘Royalty’ (not patented). ‘Nr7’ is similar to ‘JdeBoer19’ in having a compact plant habit. ‘Nr7’ differs from ‘JdeBoer19’ in producing fruit on floricanes. ‘Boyne’ is similar to ‘JdeBoer19’ in producing an abundance of sweet fruit on primocanes but differs from ‘JdeBoer19’ in having less compact plant habit. ‘Royalty’ is similar to ‘JdeBoer19’ in producing fruit on primocanes but differs from ‘JdeBoer19’ in having a less compact plant habit and in producing fruit that are purple-red in color.

The Applicant asserts that no publications or advertisements relating to sales, offers for sale, or public distribution occurred more than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application. Any information about the claimed plant less than one year prior to the effective filing date would have been obtained from a direct or indirect disclosure from the Inventor under 35 U.S.C. 102(b)(1).

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance and distinct characteristics of the new Rubus. The photographs were taken of a 3-years in age as grown outdoors in a trial garden in Boelenslaan, The Netherlands.

The colors in the photographs are as close as possible with the photographic and printing technology utilized. The colors in the photograph may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description, which accurately describe the colors of the new Rubus.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT

The following is a detailed description of plants 3-years in age as grown outdoors in a 5-liter container in Lottum, The Netherlands. The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, as it has not been tested under all possible environmental conditions. The color determination is in accordance with The 2015 Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

  • • Plant type.—Fruit producing perennial.
    • Plant habit.—Upright and compact.
    • Height and spread.—An average of 50 cm in height and 30 cm in diameter as a 3-year-old plant in a container.
    • Cold hardiness.—At least to U.S.D.A. Zone 5b.
    • Diseases and pests.—No resistance or susceptibility to pests or diseases has been observed.
    • Root description.—Fibrous, 165B in color with tips NN155D.
    • Branching habit.—Branching from the base, previous years growth either dies back in winter or is pruned.
    • Propagation.—Stem cuttings.
    • Root development.—An average of 6 to 8 weeks to initiate roots, an average of 4 months to fully develop roots as a young plant.
    • Growth rate.—Vigorous.
