Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of Heuchera plant named ‘Rex Peppermint’, characterized by its uniformly mounded plant habit; densely foliated and bushy appearance; greyed green-colored leaves; long flowering period; numerous inflorescences with sterile red purple-colored flowers; relative low sensitivity to Powdery Mildew; and good garden performance.
Description
Botanical designation: Heuchera hybrid X Heuchera sanguinea.
Cultivar denomination: ‘REX PEPPERMINT’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct Heuchera plant of Heuchera, botanically known as Heuchera hybrid X Heuchera sanguinea and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Rex Peppermint’.
The objective of the breeding program is to create new compact Heuchera plants with attractive leaf colors, less sensitivity to Powdery Mildew and good garden performance.
The new Heuchera plant originated from a cross-pollination in August, 2014 in Zuidwolde, The Netherlands of Heuchera hybrid ‘Electric Lime’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 21,872, as the female, or seed, parent with a proprietary selection of Heuchera sanguinea identified as code number 083-C063, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Heuchera plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant from within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled greenhouse environment in Zuidwolde, The Netherlands in June, 2015.
Asexual reproduction of the new Heuchera plant by in vitro meristem culture in a controlled environment in Zuidwolde, The Netherlands since February, 2017 has shown that the unique features of this new Heuchera plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
The new Heuchera plant has not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Rex Peppermint’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Rex Peppermint’ as a new and distinct Heuchera plant:

- 1. Uniformly mounded plant habit.
- 2. Densely foliated and bushy appearance.
- 3. Greyed green-colored leaves.
- 4. Long flowering period.
- 5. Numerous inflorescences with sterile red purple-colored flowers.
- 6. Relative low sensitivity to Powdery Mildew.
- 7. Good garden performance.
Plants of the new Heuchera differ from plants of the female parent, ‘Electric Lime’, in leaf color as plants of ‘Electric Lime’ have gold to lime-colored leaves. In addition, plants of the new Heuchera and ‘Electric Lime’ differ in flower color as plants of ‘Electric Lime’ have white-colored flowers.
Plants of the new Heuchera differ from plants of the male parent selection in flower color as plants of the male parent selection have red-colored flowers. In addition, plants of the new Heuchera have larger leaves than plants of the male parent selection.
Plants of the new Heuchera can be compared to plants of Heuchera hybrid ‘Berry Timeless’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 26,357. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Heuchera differ primarily from plants of ‘Berry Timeless’ in flower sterility as plants of ‘Berry Timeless’ have fertile flowers than produce fruits and seeds. In addition, plants of the new Heuchera and ‘Berry Timeless’ differ in flower color as plants of ‘Berry Timeless’ have light pink-colored flowers.
The accompanying colored photographs illustrates the overall appearance of the new Heuchera plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Heuchera plant.

The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown during the late spring and early summer in 2-liter containers in an outdoor nursery in Wieringerwerf, The Netherlands and under cultural practices typical of commercial Heuchera production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 18° C. to 30° C. and night temperatures ranged from 6° C. to 18° C. Plants were one year old when the photographs and the description were taken. In the description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2015 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.

- Pathogen & pest resistance: Plants of the new Heuchera have been observed to be relatively less sensitive to Powdery Mildew (Sphaerotheca macularis). Resistance to pests and other pathogens has not been observed on plants of the new Heuchera grown under commercial conditions to date.
- Garden performance: Plants of the new Heuchera have been observed to have good garden performance and to tolerate high temperatures about 35° C. and to be suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 3 through 9.
