Abstract

A new and distinct Gypsophila cultivar named ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ is disclosed, characterized by large full, pure white flowers and easy harvest. The new variety is a Gypsophila, suitable for cut flower production and outdoor garden or container uses.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Gypsophila paniculata.
Variety denomination: ‘DGYPCOSMIC’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The new Gypsophila cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Gavriel Danziger in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. The objective of the breeding program was to produce new Gypsophila varieties for cut flower production. The open pollination resulting in this new variety was made during the March 2007.
The seed parent is the unpatented, propriety variety referred to as Gypsophila ‘D-10’. The pollen parent is unknown as it was an open pollination breeding program. The new variety was discovered in December 2007 by the inventor in a group of seedlings resulting from the 2012 open pollination, in a greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ was first performed by basal vegetative cuttings during December 2007, at a greenhouse in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel. Subsequent propagation has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in multiple successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The cultivar ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ as a new and distinct Gypsophila cultivar:
  • 1. Large, full flower
  • 2. Bright, pure white color.
  • 3. Easy to harvest.
PARENT COMPARISON
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ are similar to plants of the seed parent, in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ differ in the following;
  • 1. Flower size of the new variety is larger than that of the parent.
COMMERCIAL COMPARISON
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ can be compared to the commercial variety Gypsophila ‘DGYPXLENCE’ unpatented. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ differs in the following:
  • 1. ‘DGYPXLENCE’ flowering time is earlier
  • 2. ‘DGYPXLENCE’ flower is larger in moderate climates.
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ can also be compared to the variety Gypsophila ‘DGYPBRIDE’, unpatented. These varieties are similar in most horticultural characteristics; however, ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ differs in the following:
  • 1. ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ flower is larger than the flower of ‘DGYPBRIDE’.
  • 2. ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ flower is fuller in cold and low light conditions.
  • 3. ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ flower color is more pure white than the flower color of ‘DGYPBRIDE’.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color multiple inflorescence of ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ grown outdoors in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel.
FIG. 2 illustrates in full color a close-up view of a flower of ‘DGYPCOSMIC’.
The photographs were taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Mini Colour Chart 2005 except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘DGYPCOSMIC’ plants grown in ground beds, outdoors in Moshav Mishmar Hashiva, Israel, under natural lighting. Measurements were taken during April of 2016. The plants were approximately 6 months old. The growing temperature ranged from approximately 12° C. to 35° C. during the days, 4° C. to 28° C. during the nights. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.

PROPAGATION
  • Time to initiate rooting: Vegetative cuttings.
  • Root description: 21 to 28 days at approximately 20° C.
  • Root description: White Fibers.

  • Plant spread: Approximately 65 cm.
  • Growth rate: Approximately 11 weeks in spring-summer Israel conditions.

  • Approximate quantity of lateral branches: Approximately 10.
  • Diameter of lateral branches: Approximately 0.4 cm.
