Abstract
A new Petunia plant named ‘PEHY0014’ particularly distinguished by the large, violet-purple flowers with white margins, deep green foliage, good branching, early flowering, a semi-upright habit and is floriferous throughout the season.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Petunia hybrida.
Varietal denomination: ‘PEHY0014’.
The present invention comprises a new Petunia, botanically known as Petunia hybrida, and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘PEHY0014’.
‘PEHY0014’ is a product of a planned breeding program. The new cultivar has large, violet-purple flowers with white margins, deep green foliage, good branching, a semi-upright habit, early flowering, and floriferous throughout the season.
‘PEHY0014’ originated from a hybridization made in October 2010 in a controlled breeding environment in Enkhuizen, Netherlands. The female parent was the unpatented proprietary plant designated ‘P0189’ with purple flower color and white margin, smaller flower size, and much later to flower.
The male parent of ‘PEHY0014’ was an unpatented proprietary plant identified as ‘N0338-1’ with very large, purple with white margin flowers, a plant with low vigor and poor branching.
The resulting seeds were sown in February 2011. ‘PEHY0014’ was selected as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross May 25, 2011 in a controlled environment in Enkhuizen, Netherlands.
The first act of asexual reproduction of ‘PEHY0014’ was accomplished when vegetative cuttings were propagated from the initial selection in June 2011 in a controlled environment in Enkhuizen, Netherlands.
Horticultural examination of plants grown from cuttings of the plant initiated in September 2011 in Angers, France, and continuing thereafter, has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for ‘PEHY0014’ are firmly fixed and are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
‘PEHY0014’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity, and day length.
A Plant Breeder's Right for this cultivar was applied for in the European Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) on Jun. 27, 2014, No. 2014/1722. ‘PEHY0014’ has not been made publicly available more than one year prior to the filing of this application.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be basic characteristics of the new variety. The combination of these characteristics distinguishes this Petunia as a new and distinct variety.
The accompanying photographic drawing shows typical flower and foliage characteristics of ‘PEHY0014’ with colors being as true as possible with an illustration of this type. The photographic drawing shows in FIG. 2 . a flowering plant of the new variety and in FIG. 1 . a close-up of the flowers.
The plant descriptions and measurements were taken around Oct. 1, 2014, from plants grown for breeding purposes in a greenhouse in Enkhuizen, Netherlands. The plants had been planted around Jul. 10, 2014. They were approximately 12 weeks of age and growing in 19 cm containers. They had been cut back a few weeks before the observations.
The aforementioned photographs were taken in April 2014 from plants growing in a greenhouse trial in Andijk, Netherlands. These plants were approximately 12-13 weeks of age.
Color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart (R.H.S.) 2001.
