Abstract

A new and distinct Clematis hybrid named ‘KBK06’ is disclosed, characterized by a distinctive violet-pink flowers, and dense, shrubby plant form. Plant habit is well suited for container plantings. Flowers in Spring (May/June), through Fall August/September. The new cultivar is a Clematis typically suited for ornamental container and landscape use.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Clematis hybrid.

Variety denomination: ‘KBK06’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The new cultivar is the result of a planned breeding program in Hoganas Sweden. The inventor is Kjell Bolinder, a citizen of Sweden. The new variety was derived from an open-pollination. The seed parent, Clematis hybrid ‘Vino’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 9,290 was grown in a situation allowing for pollination by several unidentified pollen parents. The new variety was discovered in June 2005.

After selecting and isolating the new cultivar, asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘KBK06’ was first performed in in Sweden, at a hobbyist nursery by vegetative cuttings in June 2006. ‘KBK06’ has since produced multiple generations, and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The cultivar ‘KBK06’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘KBK06’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘KBK06’ as a new and distinct Clematis cultivar:

• • 1. Intense violet-pink flower color.
  • 2. Stamens are white and silvery-grey.
  • 3. Single flowers
  • 4. Dense, bushy plant habit.
  • 5. Suitability for container culture.
  • 6. Short plants

PARENTAL COMPARISON

The new variety is similar to the seed parent in most horticultural characteristics, however plant of the new variety differ in the following:

• • 1. Flower color of the new variety is deeper, more intense and with more purple tone.
  • 2. Plants of the new variety are shorter and denser.
  • 3. Flowers of the new variety are single, whereas flowers of ‘Vino’ are semi-double.

COMMERCIAL COMPARISON

Plants of the new cultivar ‘KBK06’ are similar to the commercial variety Clematis hybrid ‘Beauty of Worcester’ unpatented, in most horticultural characteristics. However, the new variety differs from ‘Beauty of Worcester’ in the following:

• • 1. The new variety has larger flowers.
  • 2. The new variety has a more violet-pink color, compared to the purple color of this comparator.
  • 3. The new variety is denser and shrubbier than ‘Beauty of Worcester’.
  • 4. Flowers of the new variety are single, whereas flowers of ‘Beauty of Worcester’ are semi-double.

The new variety can also be compared to Clematis ‘Lasurstern’, unpatented, differing in the following characteristics:

• • 1. The new variety has smaller flowers.
  • 2. The new variety has a more violet-pink color, compared to the purple color of this comparator.
  • 3. The new variety is denser and shrubbier than ‘Lasurstern’.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH

The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical mature flowers and foliage of ‘KBK06’ grown outdoors in Germany. The plant is approximately 8 months old. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2007, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘KBK06’ plants grown outdoors in Germany. The growing temperature ranged from 0° C. to 25° C. at night to 0° C. to 30° C. during the day. No artificial light, photoperiodic treatments or chemical treatments were given to the plants. Plants were pinched once. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical flowering types.

• Temperature tolerance: Tolerates temperatures from approximately −25° C. to 45° C.
