Abstract
A new Pelargonium plant named ‘PEPZ0005’ particularly distinguished by the pink colored inflorescences held above the medium-green foliage, large single florets, trailing habit and drought tolerant with continuous color through the summer.
Description
Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Pelargonium peltatum.
Varietal denomination: ‘PEPZ0005’.
The present invention comprises a new Pelargonium, botanically known as Pelargonium peltatum, and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘PEPZ0005’.
‘PEPZ0005’ is a product of a planned breeding program. The new cultivar ‘PEPZ0005’ has pink colored inflorescences held above the medium-green foliage, large single florets, trailing habit and drought tolerant with continuous color through the summer.
‘PEPZ0005’ originates from a hybridization in a controlled breeding program made in 2008, in Caldar, Gran Canaria. The female parent was an unpatented, proprietary plant of Pelargonium peltatum parentage, identified as ‘k02-7156-6’ with lighter rose color florets and smaller more open plant habit when compared to ‘PEPZ0005’.
The male parent of ‘PEPZ0005’ was an unpatented, proprietary plant of Pelargonium peltatum parentage, identified as ‘k03-8277-8’ with more blue-rose colored florets and a more open plant habit when compared to ‘PEPZ0005’. The resultant seed was sown in December 2008 in a greenhouse in Hillscheid, Germany.
‘PEPZ0005’ was selected as one flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in April 2009 in a greenhouse in Hillscheid, Germany.
The first act of asexual reproduction of ‘PEPZ0005’ was accomplished when vegetative cuttings were propagated from the initial selection in December 2009 in a greenhouse in Hillscheid, Germany.
Horticultural examination of plants grown from cuttings of the plant initiated in December 2009 in Hillscheid, Germany, and continuing thereafter, has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for ‘PEPZ0005’ are firmly fixed and are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
‘PEPZ0005’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity, and day length.
‘PEPZ0005’ has not been made publicly available more than one year prior to the filing of this application.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the basic characteristics of the new variety. The combination of these characteristics distinguishes this Pelargonium as a new and distinct variety.
The accompanying photographic drawing shows typical flower and foliage characteristics of ‘PEPZ0005’ with colors being as true as possible with an illustration of this type.
The photographic drawings show in FIG. 1 , a close-up of an inflorescence and in FIG. 2 , a flowering plant of the new variety.
The plant descriptions and measurements were taken in Enkhuizen, the Netherlands, in early September 2015 under natural light. These plants were approximately 11 weeks old and were grown in 19 cm pots in a greenhouse trial. The plants shown in the photographs were the same plants. Pictures were taken at description moment.
Color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart (R.H.S.) 2001.
