A new and distinct cultivar of Lavandula plant named ‘SuperBlue’, characterized by its deep violet-blue colored flowers, medium green-colored foliage, and moderately vigorous, mounded-compact growth habit.
Description
Latin name of genus and species of plant claimed: Lavandula angustifolia.
Variety denomination: ‘SuperBlue’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Lavandula plant botanically known as Lavandula angustifolia and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘SuperBlue’.
The new cultivar originated in a controlled breeding program in Venhuizen, The Netherlands during July 2005. The objective of the breeding program was the development of Lavandula cultivars that are free-flowering with a mounded-compact growth habit.
The new Lavandula cultivar is the result of cross-pollination. The female (seed) parent of the new cultivar is the proprietary Lavandula angustifolia breeding selection coded 1313-01, not patented, characterized by its violet-blue colored flowers, medium green-colored foliage, and mounded-compact growth habit. The male (pollen) parent of the new cultivar is the proprietary Lavandula angustifolia breeding selection coded 1254-01, not patented, characterized by its violet-blue colored flowers, medium green-colored foliage, and mounded-compact growth habit. The new cultivar was discovered and selected as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the above stated cross-pollination during July 2006 in a controlled environment at Venhuizen, The Netherlands.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal stem cuttings since July 2006 at Venhuizen, The Netherlands and Elburn, Ill. has demonstrated that the new cultivar reproduces true to type with all of the characteristics, as herein described, firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of such asexual propagation.
The following characteristics of the new cultivar have been repeatedly observed and can be used to distinguish ‘SuperBlue’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Lavandula plant:

- 1. Deep violet-blue colored flowers;
- 2. Medium green-colored foliage; and
- 3. Moderately vigorous, mounded-compact growth habit.
Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the female parent primarily in having a deeper violet-blue colored flower. Plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the male parent primarily in having a longer spike length.
Of the many commercially available Lavandula cultivars, the most similar in comparison to the new cultivar is ‘Blue Royalty’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 20,657. However, in side-by side comparisons, plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of ‘Blue Royalty’ in at least the following characteristics:

- 1. Plants of the new cultivar have a flower color that is darker and more blue than plants of ‘Blue Royalty’; and
- 2. Plants of the new cultivar have shorter peduncles than plants of ‘Blue Royalty’.
The accompanying photographs show, as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in color illustrations of this type, typical flower and foliage characteristics of the new cultivar. Colors in the photographs differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed description, which accurately describes the colors of ‘SuperBlue’. Plants were transplanted from greenhouse-grown one-gallon containers and field grown for approximately 8 weeks in West Chicago, Ill.
The new cultivar has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions to date. Accordingly, it is possible that the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in the environment, such as temperature, light intensity, and day length, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The chart used in the identification of colors described herein is The R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, 2007 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary significance are used. The color values were determined in July 2012 under natural light conditions in West Chicago, Ill.
The following descriptions and measurements describe plants produced from cuttings from stock plants and grown in a glass-covered greenhouse in one-gallon containers under conditions comparable to those used in commercial practice. Greenhouse temperatures were maintained at approximately 50° F. to 70° F. (10.0° C. to 21.1° C.) during the day and approximately 35° F. to 50° F. (1.7° C. to 10.0° C.) during the night. No supplemental lighting was provided. The plants were transplanted to a field in West Chicago, Ill. and grown for approximately 8 weeks. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plants.
