Abstract

A new and distinct Pelargonium cultivar named ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’ is disclosed, characterized by bright golden foliage. The new variety is a Pelargonium, typically produced as an outdoor ornamental plant.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Pelargonium cordifolium.
Variety denomination: ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The new cultivar is a product of chance discovery. The new variety originated as a naturally occurring mutation of an unpatented, unnamed variety of Pelargonium cordifolium.
The new variety was discovered by the inventor, Lance Reiners, a citizen of the United States, on Aug. 13, 2009 in the home garden of the inventor in Santa Cruz, Calif. After identifying the new variety as a potentially interesting selection, the inventor continued confidential testing and propagation of ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’ for approximately 2 years, assessing stability of the unique characteristics of this variety.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’ was first performed at a commercial nursery in Watsonville, Calif. by vegetative cuttings in March of 2010. Access to all plants was restricted, as plants were kept in a locked greenhouse not open to the public. Through subsequent propagation by vegetative cuttings, multiple generations have been reproduced, which have shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The cultivar ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE.’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’ as a new and distinct Pelargonium cultivar: 1. Unique solid bright golden to light chartreuse foliage color.
PARENT COMPARISON
Plants of the new cultivar ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’ are similar to the parent, Pelargonium cordifolium in most horticultural characteristics. The new variety, however, produces a slower growing plant that matures to a smaller size and produces less flowers, compared to the parent. Additionally, ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’ produces foliage that is bright golden to light chartreuse compared to the parent's green foliage.
COMMERCIAL COMPARISON
‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’ is similar in most horticultural characteristics to the variety Pelargonium cordifolium ‘CAROLINE'S CITRINE’, filed concurrently with this application, application number unassigned. The two varieties differ in foliage coloration. Whereas plants of ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’ have solid colored foliage, ‘CAROLINE'S CITRINE’ produces folaige with a green blotch in the center.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a typical plant of ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’ grown in a greenhouse in Watsonville, Calif. This plant is approximately 3 months old, shown planted in a 1 gallon pot. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2001, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘DONN'S GOLDSTRIKE’ plants grown in a greenhouse in Watsonville, Calif. Temperatures ranged from 8° C. to 20° C. at night to 10° C. to 35° C. during the day. Temperatures ranged from 10° C. to 25° C. at night to 12° C. to 37° C. during the day. No artificial light, photoperiodic treatments were given to the plants. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical plant types.
