Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Mandevilla plant named ‘Gendiprote’ that is characterized by large red flowers, green leaves, an upright habit and fewer twines.

Description

Botanical classification: Mandevilla sanderi.
Variety denomination: ‘Gendiprote’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Mandevilla plant botanically known as Mandevilla sanderi and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Gendiprote’.
The new cultivar is the product of a breeding program conducted by the inventor in a cultivated area of Hagenbach, Germany. The objective of the breeding program is to develop new Mandevilla cultivars that have large red flowers.
‘Gendiprote’ originated from the crossing of the female or seed parent a proprietary selection of Mandevilla sanderi identified as ‘DO 115’ (not patented) and the male or pollen parent a proprietary selection of Mandevilla sanderi identified as ‘DO 104’ (not patented). The cultivar ‘Gendiprote’ was selected by the inventor in June of 2006 as a single plant within the progeny of the stated cross in a controlled environment of Hagenbach, Germany.
Asexual reproduction by terminal cuttings of the new cultivar ‘Gendiprote’ were first done in October of 2006 in Hagenbach, Germany. Since that time, under careful observation, the unique characteristics of the new cultivar have been uniform, stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The following represent the distinguishing characteristics of the new Mandevilla cultivar ‘Gendiprote’. These traits in combination distinguish ‘Gendiprote’ as a new and distinct cultivar apart from other existing varieties of Mandevilla known to me.
    • 1. Mandevilla ‘Gendiprote’ exhibits large red flowers.
    • 2. Mandevilla ‘Gendiprote’ exhibits green leaves.
    • 3. Mandevilla ‘Gendiprote’ exhibits an upright habit.
    • 4. Mandevilla ‘Gendiprote’ exhibits fewer twines.
The closest comparison variety is Mandevilla ‘Fisrix Dered’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 20,714). ‘Gendiprote’ is different than ‘Fisrix Dered’ in having fewer branches and flowers that have a lighter red outer surface with a larger diameter corolla.
The new cultivar ‘Gendiprote’ is distinguishable from the female parent Mandevilla ‘DO 115’ in having fewer branches and flowers that have a darker red inner surface with a larger diameter corolla.
The new cultivar ‘Gendiprote’ is distinguishable from the male parent Mandevilla ‘DO 104’ in having fewer branches and flowers that have a darker red inner surface with a larger diameter corolla.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING
The accompanying photograph illustrates the distinguishing traits of Mandevilla ‘Gendiprote’. The plant in the photograph shows an overall view of an 8 month old plant. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT
The following is a detailed description of the new Mandevilla cultivar named ‘Gendiprote’. Data was collected in Hagenbach, Germany from 8 month old plants grown under glass greenhouse conditions. The plants were grown in 13 cm. diameter containers. The time of year was Summer and the daytime temperature ranged from 18 to 26° Centigrade. The temperature at night ranged from 16 to 20° Centigrade. The light level was 5 to 25 klux. No photoperiodic treatments or growth retardants were used. Color determinations are in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2001 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The growing requirements are similar to the species.
‘Gendiprote’ has not been tested under all possible conditions and phenotypic differences may be observed with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, however, without any variance in genotype.

  • Vigor: Moderate.
  • Propagation: Terminal cuttings.
  • Time to initiate roots (winter): Approximately 21 days to produce roots on an initial cutting.
  • Time to initiate roots (summer): Approximately 14 days to produce roots on an initial cutting.
  • Time to produce a rooted cutting or liner: 8 weeks in Winter and 7 weeks in Summer.
  • High temperature tolerance: 38 degrees Centigrade.
  • Low temperature tolerance: 4 degrees Centigrade.
  • Root system: Fibrous, fleshy.
  • Plant form: Perennial, upright and vining plant habit. Slightly woody plant base with herbaceous younger shoots. Initially upright. Can develop twines under low light conditions.
