Abstract

A new and distinct Symphoricarpos hybrid cultivar named ‘SOFIE’ is disclosed, characterized by large berries, long fruiting stems, light green foliage and pink berries tinged with white. The new variety is a Symphoricarpos hybrid, suitable for outdoor landscape and decorative cut fruiting stem use.

Description

Latin name of the genus and species: Symphoricarpos hybrid.
Variety denomination: ‘SOFIE’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The new cultivar is a chance seedling selection by the inventor, Catharina Maria Hoekstra-Arisz, a citizen of the Netherlands. The new variety was discovered at a commercial nursery in Beverwijk, The Netherlands, in October 2003, by the inventor growing in the ground among a field of mixed commercial varieties of Symphoricarpos. The parent varieties are unknown.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar ‘SOFIE’ by vegetative cuttings was first performed in March 2006, at a commercial nursery in Beverwijk, The Netherlands and has shown that the unique features of this cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The cultivar ‘SOFIE’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, day length, and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘SOFIE’ These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘SOFIE’ as a new and distinct Symphoricarpos cultivar:
    • 1. Large berries.
    • 2. Long fruiting stems.
    • 3. Light green foliage.
    • 4. Pink berries tinged with white.
COMMERCIAL COMPARISION
Plants of the new cultivar ‘SOFIE’ are similar to plants of the unpatented variety, Symphoricarpos hybrid ‘Purple Hedge’ in most horticultural characteristics, however, plants of the new cultivar have lighter foliage, longer stems, and lighter colored, larger berries.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH
The accompanying photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates in full color a close up of the berries produced by ‘SOFIE.’
The photograph in FIG. 2 illustrates in full color typical plants of ‘SOFIE’ grown outdoors in Beverwijk, The Netherlands. Plants are approximately 2 years old.
The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The following observations and measurements describe ‘SOFIE’ plants grown outdoors in Beverwijk, The Netherlands. The growing temperature ranged from approximately 1° to 12° C. at night and 10° to 25° C. during the day. Plants were described in October of 2008. Measurements and numerical values represent averages of typical flowering types. No chemical or photoperiodic treatments were given.
