Abstract
A shrub rose plant named ‘INTERhappy’, characterized by a combination of dark green, glossy foliage; flowers that are a yellow-orange color; and a compact form, particularly suitable as a groundcover.
Description
Genus and Species: Rosa hybrida.
Variety Denomination: ‘INTERhappy’.
The present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of a shrub rose plant named ‘INTERhappy’ which was originated by me as a cross of a pollen parent and a seed parent.
The primary objective of this breeding was to produce a new shrub rose variety.
The objective was substantially achieved as evidenced by a new shrub rose having a unique combination of characteristics that are outstanding in the new variety and that distinguish the new variety from its parents and other varieties of which the inventor is aware including dark green, glossy foliage, flowers that are a yellow-orange color (apricot/pink), and a compact form, particularly suitable as ground cover.
Asexual reproduction of this new variety by softwood cuttings, as performed at Wasco, Calif., shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.
‘INTERhappy’ has a more compact growth than the seed parent, which also had an orange flower color. The pollen parent had also compact growth, as ‘INTERhappy’, but the flower color of the pollen parent was pale yellow.
The inventor is not aware of any similar varieties with the flower color of ‘INTERhappy’.
The accompanying illustration shows typical specimens of the vegetative growth and flowers of this new variety in different stages of development, depicted in color as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in a color illustration of this character.
The following is a detailed description of my new rose cultivar with color descriptions using terminology in accordance with the Royal Horticultural Society (London) Colour Chart© 2001, except where ordinary dictionary significance of color is indicated.
- Parentage:
-
- Seed parent.—Unnamed seedling (B277-89) [B148-86×B269-86] (not patented).
- Pollen parent.—‘INTERdust’ (U.S Plant Pat. No. 10,240).
-
Observations of the new variety were made from January 2005 to October 2007. The observations set forth below are of plants of the new variety that are three years of age and grown in a garden environment at Somis, Calif.
- Blooming Habit: Continuous.
- Bud:
-
- Size.—About 18-20 mm and 10-12 mm in diameter when the petals start to unfurl.
- Form.—The bud form is long, pointed ovoid.
- Color.—When sepals first divide, bud color is Red Group 40D. When half blown, the upper sides of the petals are Yellow-Orange Group 23C with center vein of Red Group 40D approximately 2-3 mm in width and the lower sides of the petals are Red Group 40D with occasional Yellow-Orange Group 23C on margins.
- Sepals.—Color: Upper surface: Yellow-Green Group 147D. Lower surface: Yellow-Green Group 144C with prominent center vein of Green Group 150C. Length: 25-30 mm. Width: 5-7 mm. Shape: Subulate. Surface: Upper: Ciliolate. Lower: Smooth. There are three lightly appendaged sepals. There are two unappendaged sepals with glandular edges.

-
- Bloom:
-
- Size.—Small. Average open diameter is about 4 cm.
- Borne.—In clusters of 7-13 blooms having pyramidal shape.
- Stems.—Strength: Normal. Average length is about 20-30 cm with a diameter of 6-8 mm.
- Form.—When first open: Flat. Permanence: Outer petals edges curl slightly.
- Petalage.—Number of petals under normal conditions: 6.
- Color.—The upper sides of the petals are Yellow-Orange Group 23C with prominent center vein of Red Group 40D. The reverse sides of the petals are Red Group 40D with occasional Yellow-Orange Group 23C on margins. The base of the petals has Yellow Group 13B. The major color on the upper sides is Yellow-Orange Group 23C and Red Group 40D.
