Abstract

A new Calathea plant particularly distinguished by having a tall, upright plant habit with long-lasting, pink and green bracted inflorescences which are held high above the foliage, and large, elliptical leaves marked with broad metallic silver-green bands, is disclosed.

Genus and species: Calathea hybrid
Variety denomination: ‘TWYCA0017 2’.
BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT
The present invention comprises a new and distinct cultivar of calathea, botanically known as Calathea hybrid and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘TWYCA0017 2’. The new cultivar originated as a sport from a Calathea plant designated ‘Mia’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 16,425) in the fall of 2003 in Apopka, Fla.
A single plant selection was chosen for further evaluation and for asexual propagation in fall, 2003.
The new cultivar was first propagated in the fall of 2003 in Apopka, Fla. and has been asexually reproduced repeatedly by division and tissue culture over three generations. The present invention has been found to retain its distinctive characteristics through successive asexual propagations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The following are the most outstanding and distinguishing characteristics of this new cultivar when grown under normal horticultural practices in Apopka, Fla.
1. Long-lasting, pink and green bracted inflorescences which are displayed above the patterned foliage; and
2. Elliptical leaves marked with a broad metallic silver-green band.

This new Calathea plant is illustrated by the accompanying photograph which shows the overall plant habit including blooms and foliage of the plant; the colors shown are as true as can be reasonably obtained by conventional photographic procedures.
DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW CULTIVAR
The following detailed description sets forth the distinctive characteristics of ‘TWYCA0017 2’. The data which define these characteristics were collected from asexual reproductions carried out in Apopka, Fla. The data were obtained in November 2006 from 14-month old plants from a 13 week old tissue culture derived line. The plants were grown in a greenhouse with fiberglass panel siding with inflated double poly roof with a modine heating, fan and pad cooling system. The average daily temperature was between 24° C. to 35° C. and the average nightly was between 18° C. and 24° C. Color readings were taken under natural light in the greenhouse. Color references are to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2001 edition.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW PLANT

Leaf center: RHS 147A to RHS 147B with faint green RHS 147B markings following the midrib. Lower surface: Upper surface pattern visible through the lower surface. Leaf margin: Marked with a broad band of RHS 191A variably marked with sparse flecks and streaks of RHS 191A to RHS 191B along with the leaf edge; edge of leaf trimmed with RHS 187A. Leaf center: RHS 191A to RHS 191B. Mature leaf: Upper surface: Leaf margin: Marked with a broad grey-green bank of RHS 190A to RHS 191B variably marked with sparse dark green flecks and streaks of RHS 147A along the leaf edge. Leaf center: Darker than, but closest to RHS 147A with RHS 147A to RHS 147B markings following the midrib. Lower surface: Upper surface pattern visible through the lower surface. Leaf margin: Marked with a broad band of RHS 191A to RHS 138C variably marked with sparse flecks and streaks of RHS 191A to RHS 189A along the leaf edge; edge of leaf trimmed with RHS 187A. Leaf center: RHS 189A to RHS 191A.
