Abstract

Shrub rose plant having large cluster size; vigorous growth; healthy, glossy foliage; novel flower color and ease of rooting as soft or hardwood cuttings.

Description

Genus and species: Rosa hybrida.
Variety denomination: ‘JAChanpa’.
ORIGIN OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of shrub rose plant named ‘JAChanpa’ which was originated by me by crossing the variety ‘JACment’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 10,282, with the variety ‘JACrex’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 12,130 .
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The primary objective of this breeding was to produce a new rose variety having the complex flower color and healthy foliage of the female parent combined with the large clusters and extremely vigorous growth of the male parent.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The objective was substantially achieved, along with other desirable improvements, as evidenced by the following unique combination of characteristics that are outstanding in the new variety and that distinguish it from its parents, as well as from all other varieties of which I am aware:
    • 1. Large cluster size.
    • 2. Vigorous growth.
    • 3. Healthy, glossy foliage.
    • 4. Novel flower color.
    • 5. Ease of rooting as soft or hardwood cuttings.
Asexual reproduction of this new variety by cuttings, as performed at Wasco, Calif., shows that the foregoing and all other characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.
Comparison with Parents
As compared to the female parent ‘JACment’ which has yellow, orange and pink blend flowers ‘JAChanpa’ has red-purple flowers and the plant is much taller. The male parent, ‘JACrex’has a yellow-white group 158B flower.
Comparison with Similar Variety
There are no known roses such as ‘JAChanpa’. The most similar variety would be the McGredy roses such as ‘Matangi’ (MACman) which have similar flower colors but are much more compact.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ILLUSTRATION
The accompanying illustration shows typical specimens of the vegetative growth and flowers of this new variety in different stages of development, depicted in color as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in a color illustration of this character.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
The following is a detailed description of my new rose cultivar with color descriptions using terminology in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society (London) Colour Chart© 2001, except where ordinary dictionary significance of color is indicated.
  • Parentage:
      • Seed parent.—‘JACment’ (Pure Poetry), U.S. Plant Pat. No. 10,282.
      • Pollen Parent.—‘JACrex’ (Fabulous!), U.S. Plant Pat. No. 12,130.
