A new and distinct cultivar of Silene dioica plant given the cultivar name ‘Valley High’ characterized by creamy yellow leaves with irregular olive green centers and excellent vigor.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of a hardy perennial, Silene dioica, known by the cultivar name of ‘Valley High’. The genus Silene is a member of the family Caryophyllaceae.

The new cultivar originated as a mutation from tissue culture of Silene dioica ‘Jade Valley’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 11,459).

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

This new cultivar is characterized by:

• • 1) Creamy yellow leaves with a two-tone, grey green center.
  • 2) Vigor.

Asexual propagation by tissue culture as done in Canby, Oreg., shows that the foregoing characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations. This new cultivar has been reproduced only by asexual propagation (cuttings and tissue culture). Each of the progeny exhibits identical characteristics to the original plant. The present invention has not been evaluated under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary with variations in environment without a change in the genotype of the plant.

DETAILED PLANT DESCRIPTION

The following is a detailed description of the new cultivar based on observations of a two-year-old specimen grown in a one-gallon container in a greenhouse in Canby, Oreg. The color descriptions are all based on The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart.

• Culture: Prefers moist, well drained soil in part sun.

COMPARISONS TO SIMILAR SILENE DIOICA

Compared to its parent, Silene dioica ‘Jade Valley’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 11,459), this new cultivar has longer, thicker leaves and a larger green center giving the plant good vigor. Silene dioica ‘Jade Valley’ was difficult to produce and grow due to its almost totally white leaves, which reduced its vigor.

Compared to Silene dioica ‘Clifford Moor’ (an unpatented plant), this new cultivar has darker pink flowers, larger, broader leaves with a cream rather than light green margin.
