Abstract

Hybrid tea rose plant having large, bright, early yellow flower changing to a blend as it ages; sweet fragrance; dark, glossy foliage; resistance to powdery mildew and rust; and ability to grow vigorously on its own roots.

Description

Genus and species: Rosa hybrida.
Variety denomination: ‘JACfrens’.
ORIGIN OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of a hybrid tea rose plant named ‘JACfrens’ which was originated by me by crossing the variety ‘KEIbian’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 8,476, with the variety ‘JACjel’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 4,438.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The primary objective of this breeding was to produce a new rose variety having the fragrance and good disease resistance of the female parent combined with the large, bright yellow flower of the male parent.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The objective was substantially achieved, along with other desirable improvements, as evidenced by the following unique combination of characteristics that are outstanding in the new variety and that distinguish it from its parents, as well as from all other varieties of which I am aware:
    • 1. Large, bright early flower changing to blend as it ages.
    • 2. Sweet fragrance.
    • 3. Dark, glossy foliage.
    • 4. Resistance to powdery mildew and rust.
    • 5. Ability to grow vigorously on its own roots.
Asexual reproduction of this new variety by cuttings, as performed at Wasco, Calif., shows that the foregoing and all other characteristics and distinctions come true to form and are established and transmitted through succeeding propagations.
COMPARISON WITH PARENTS
As compared to the female parent ‘KEIbain’, ‘JACfrens’ differs in flower color being brighter yellow, and having less color change as it ages. As compared to the male parent, ‘JACfrens’ differs in having much more fragrance and having a blend of color in the old flower. ‘JACjel’ is pure yellow.
COMPARISON WITH SIMILAR VARIETY
A similar variety is ‘MEIlvar’, U.S. Plant Pat. No. 7,541) which has more petals but less fragrance than ‘JACfrens’ and has pure yellow flowers without any blush on petals.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE ILLUSTRATION
The accompanying illustration shows typical specimens of the vegetative growth and flowers of this new variety in different stages of development, depicted in color as nearly true as it is reasonably possible to make the same in a color illustration of this character.
DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
The following is a detailed description of my new rose cultivar with color descriptions using terminology in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society (London) Colour Chart© 2001, except where ordinary dictionary significance of color is indicated.
  • Parentage:
      • Seed parent.—‘KEIbian’ (French Perfume), U.S. Plant Pat. No. 8,476.
