Definitions
- the present Invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant, botanically known as Impatiens hawkeri, and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Balcebstar’.
- the new Impatiens is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
- the objective of the breeding program is to develop New Guinea Impatiens cultivars that have a freely branching growth habit and large flowers with attractive flower colors.
- the new Impatiens originated from a cross-pollination made by the Inventor in 1998 of a proprietary selection of Impatiens hawkeri identified as code number 2160, not patented, as the female, or seed parent, with the Impatiens hawkeri cultivar Neptis, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 10,321, as the male, or pollen parent.
- the cultivar Balcebstar was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled environment in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
- Plants of the new Impatiens differ primarily from plants of the female parent in flower color. Plants of the new Impatiens differ primarily from plants of the male parent in leaf size.
- Plants of the new Impatiens can be compared to plants of the cultivar BFP-467 Cherry Red, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 9,520. In side-by-side comparisons conducted in West Chicago, Ill., plants of the new Impatiens differed from plants of the cultivar BFP-467 Cherry Red in the following characteristics:
- Plants of the new Impatiens had darker green leaves than plants of the cultivar BFP-467 Cherry Red.
- Plants of the new Impatiens had light pink and red bi-colored flowers whereas plants of the cultivar BFP-467 Cherry Red had solid dark red-colored flowers.
- Plants of the new Impatiens can be compared to plants of the cultivar Celebration Cherry Star, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 8,407. In side-by-side comparisons conducted in West Chicago, Ill., plants of the new Impatiens differed from plants of the cultivar Celebration Cherry Star in the following characteristics:
- Plants of the new Impatiens were not as freely flowering as plants of the cultivar Celebration Cherry Star.
- Plants of the new Impatiens had light pink and red bi-colored flowers whereas plants of the cultivar Celebration Cherry Star had pink and light red bi-colored flowers.
- the accompanying colored photograph illustrates the overall appearance of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photograph differ from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Impatiens.
- the photograph comprises a side perspective view of multiple flowering plants of ‘Balcebstar’ grown in a container.
- the cultivar Balcebstar has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions.
- the phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
- Botanical classification Impatiens hawkeri cultivar Balcebstar.
- Type cutting Terminal cuttings.
- Time to produce a rooted cutting About 21 days at 18° C.
- Foliage description Opposite or in whorls of three. Length: About 10.1 cm. Width: About 4.5 cm. Shape: Elliptic. Apex: Acuminate. Base: Attenuate. Margin: Serrulate with ciliation. Texture, upper and lower surface: Smooth, glabrous. Venation pattern: Pinnate. Color: Young and fully expanded foliage, upper surface: 200A overlain with darker green than 139A. Young and fully expanded foliage, lower surface: 187B. Venation, upper surface: 187B. Venation, lower surface: 187A. Petiole: Length: About 1.6 cm. Diameter: About 2.7 mm. Texture, upper and lower surfaces: Smooth, glabrous. Color, upper surface: 187B. Color, lower surface: 187A.
- Flower type and flowering habit Single rounded flowers. Usually about five flowers and flower buds per lateral branch. Flowers positioned above and beyond the foliage and typically face upward or outward. Flowers not fragrant. Petals self-cleaning; gynoecium persistent.
- Spur. Quantity: One per flower. Length: About 5.2 cm. Diameter, at apex: Less than 1 mm. Diameter, at flower: About 2.5 mm. Aspect: Curved downward. Color: 53B; towards apex, 145D.
- Androecium Stamen quantity/arrangement: Five fused at anthers, hooded; filaments free. Anther length: About 2 mm. Anther shape: Oval. Anther color: 10D. Pollen amount: Moderate. Pollen color: 11D. Gynoecium: Pistil quantity: One per flower. Pistil length: About 7 mm. Stigma color: Colorless. Style length: Less than 1 mm. Style color: 187C. Ovary arrangement: Five-celled. Ovary color: 187A.
- Seeds/fruits. Seed and fruit development has not been observed.
- Plants of the new Impatiens have not been observed to be resistant to pathogens and pests common to Impatiens.
