Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant named ‘Kizeg’, characterized by its large dark pink-colored flowers; upright and compact growth habit; and dark green leaves tinged with anthocyanin.
Description
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant, botanically known as Impatiens hawkeri, and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Kizeg’.
The new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Gensingen, Germany. The objective of the breeding program was to develop early-flowering varieties with numerous flowers, freely-branching and uniform plant habit, attractive flower and foliage colors, and good flower form.
The new cultivar originated from a cross made by the Inventor of the proprietary selection identified as SP913 as the male, or pollen parent, with the proprietary selection identified as P71 as the female, or seed parent.
The cultivar ‘Kizeg’ was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in a controlled environment in Gensingen, Germany, in April, 1997.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal cuttings taken at Gensingen, Germany, has shown that the unique features of this new cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Kizeg’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Kizeg’ as a new and distinct cultivar:
1. Large dark pink-colored flowers.
2. Upright and compact growth habit.
3. Dark green leaves tinged with anthocyanin.
Plants of the new cultivar can be compared to plants of the commercial cultivar ‘Grenada’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 9,343. However, in side-by-side comparisons conducted in Encinitas, Calif., plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the cultivar ‘Grenada’ in the following characteristics:
1. Plants of the new cultivar are more upright and more compact than plants of the cultivar ‘Grenada’.
2. Flowers of plants of the new cultivar are larger and flatter than flowers of plants of the cultivar ‘Grenada’ and differ slightly in color.
3. Plants of the new cultivar flower about one week earlier than plants of the cultivar ‘Grenada’.
A detailed comparison of plants of the cultivars ‘Kizeg’ and ‘Grenada’ appears in Chart A at the end of the specification.
The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type.
