Abstract
A new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatients plant named ‘Kiascia’, characterized by its large and nearly rounded red purple-colored flowers; upright and somewhat outwardly spreading growth habit; freely branching, dense and bushy plant habit; and dark green leaves.
Description
The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant, botanically known as Impatiens hawkeri, and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Kiascia’.
The new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Gensingen, Germany. The objective of the breeding program was to develop early-flowering varieties with numerous flowers, freely-branching and uniform plant habit, attractive flower and foliage colors, and good flower form.
The new cultivar originated from a cross made by the Inventor of the proprietary selection identified as DL220 as the male, or pollen parent, with the proprietary selection identified as L72 as the female, or seed parent.
The cultivar ‘Kiascia’ was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in a controlled environment in Gensingen, Germany, in April, 1997.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal cuttings taken at Gensingen, Germany, has shown that the unique features of this new cultivar are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Kiascia’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Kiascia’ as a new and distinct cultivar:
1. Large and nearly rounded red purple-colored flowers.
2. Upright and somewhat outwardly spreading growth habit.
3. Freely branching, dense and bushy plant habit.
4. Dark green leaves.
Plants of the new cultivar can be compared to plants of the commercial cultivar ‘Aruba’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 8,456. However, in side-by-side comparisons conducted in Encinitas, Calif., plants of the new cultivar differ from plants of the cultivar ‘Aruba’ in the following characteristics:
1. Plants of the new cultivar are more upright and less spreading than plants of the cultivar ‘Aruba’.
2. Leaves of plants of the new cultivar are smaller than leaves of plants of the cultivar ‘Aruba’ and differ in color.
3. Flowers of plants of the new cultivar are a more intense red purple color than flowers of plants of the cultivar ‘Aruba’.
4. Plants of the new cultivar have larger and more rounded flowers than plants of the cultivar ‘Aruba’.
5. Plants of the new cultivar flower about 7 to 10 days earlier than plants of the cultivar ‘Aruba’.

Flowers positioned above the foliage and face upward and outward. Flowers nearly rounded and mostly flat. Flowers persistent.
Flowering season.—Year-round under greenhouse conditions. In the garden, flowering is continuous from spring until fall.
Flower size.—Length: About 6.5 cm. Width: About 6.5 cm. Depth: About 2 cm.
