Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant named `Volcano Fuchsia Pink`, characterized by its dark hot pink flower color; vigorous growth habit; medium green, glossy, non-variegated foliage; and freely branching plant habit.

Description

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant, botanically known as Impatiens hawkeri, and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name `Volcano Fuchsia Pink`.
The new cultivar is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor in Paraiso, Costa Rica. The objective of the breeding program was to develop new varieties that are freely branching, uniform in growth habit, and have bright flower colors.
The new cultivar originated from a cross made by the inventor in January, 1994, of two unnamed proprietary seedlings. The cultivar `Volcano Fuchsia Pink` was discovered and selected by the inventor as a flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in a controlled environment in Paraiso, Costa Rica. Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal cuttings taken at Paraiso, Costa Rica, has shown that the unique features of this new Impatiens are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.
The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of `Volcano Fuchsia Pink`. These characteristics in combination distinguish `Volcano Fuchsia Pink` as a new and distinct cultivar:
1. Dark hot pink flower color.
2. Vigorous growth habit.
3. Medium green, glossy, non-variegated foliage.
4. Freely branching plant habit.
The new Impatiens is similar in flower color to the cultivar `Danserra`, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 8,264. However in side-by-side comparisons conducted in Apopka, Fla., plants of the new Impatiens had broader leaves, larger flowers and lighter green foliage than plants of the cultivar `Danserra`. The new Impatiens is also similar to the cultivar `Papete`, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 8,457. However in side-by-side comparisons conducted in Apopka, Fla., plants of the new Impatiens had larger flowers and lighter green foliage than plants of the cultivar `Papete`.
The accompanying colored photograph illustrates the overall appearance of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type.
The photograph comprises a top perspective view of a typical plant of `Volcano Fuchsia Pink`. The flower and foliage color in the photographs may differ from the actual colors due to light reflectance.
The cultivar `Volcano Fuchsia Pink` has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype. The following observations, measurements and comparisons describe plants grown in Apopka, Fla., under commercial practice in a polyethylene-covered greenhouse in 25-cm containers with five plants per container.
In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
