fnvamr UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES C. JOHNSON, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE HELIX GEAR COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
DESIGN FOR A GEARING-COVER 'FOR VEHICLE-FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 31 ,324, dated August 1, 1899.
Application filed July 5, 1899- Serial No- 722,881. Term of patent 14: years.
To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Moms 0. Johnson, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Conn eeticut, haveinvented a new and original Design for a Gearing-Cover for Vehicle-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,to be a full, elear, and
[O exact description of the same, and said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure l, a view in side elevation of the gearing-cover; Fig. 2, an end View, in front eleva- I5 tion, of the gearing-cover; and Fig. 3,an end View, in rear elevation, of the gearing-cover.
My invention relates to a design for covers for gearing, which as a whole is a special article of manufacture and adapted to be connected to or form part of the frame of a bicycle or like vehicle. The structure when so used comprises a cover for the crank-shaft, for the conneotingshaft, and for the gearing at the crankhanger and also at the rear end of the frame; and my said invention consists in the configuration of the structure, as hereinafter described, and shown in the drawings.
The structure as a whole comprises a circular part a as viewed in side elevation, a circular part b of smaller diameter, and an elongated central portion 0, extending from below the part a to a point above the part b, the enlarged ends at and e of this part 0 being cylin drical in outline and having walls which merge into the walls of the parts a and Z), re- 3 5 spectively.
\Vhen viewed in front elevation, as in Fig.
2, the part a appears as cylindrical in outline, with a portion a of smaller diameter than the front portion, below which the circular end of the part (1 appears.
When viewed in rear elevation, the oblong outline of the short cylindrical part b is surmounted by the circular outline of the end of the part c, the walls of these two parts merg- 5 ing into each other.
The essential feature of my design is the arrangement of the gear-covers a, and b, the former larger in diameter than the latter, with the connecting parts at c 6 extending diago- 5o nally across between the parts a and Z), the part d underlying the part a, and the part c overlying the part Z).
I clai1n- I The design for a gearing-cover for vehicleframes substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have sign ed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MOSES C. JOHNSON.
