PROCESS vQF MANUFACTURING EXPANDED METAL.
Application filed January 3,
'To all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY SALMON, a
Great Britain, residing at York'll/lansion, York street, in the city of Vvvestniinster, England, have invented new-and useful Improvements in ljrocesses of Manufacturing Expanded Metal, of which the following is a specilication.
According to this invention expanded inetal is' niade by first forming in a sheet as is'usual parallel longitudinal rows ot' slits thejunctions between the ends ot the slits of each row being between the slits of acent rows. The strips or strands so formed are according to this invention turned in pairs all in the'saine direction out ot' the plane et thesheet one strip being turned up and the adjacent one down, provision is however inade so that every-'other r w ot junctions is turned as little as possible. The sheet is then expanded the niesli in its inal candition being square or diainond shaped as de sired. The strips may be 'turned out ofthe plane of the sheet byineans ot conical rolls having surfaces set all. in the saine direction out of the plane of the sheetand having recesses at the points of contact with the junctions. y
The manufacture is preferably carried out in the machine described in the specification of the United States Patent No. 890'i27, the conical rolls as described above being sabstituted for the saw toothed rolls shown in Description of Htc drawinga-h`igure l is a plan ot a sheet after it has been slit. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of one ot' the rolls. Figs. 3 and l are sections on the lines 3, 3- and 4, fl Fig. 2. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are vertical sections of the rolls. Figs. 8, 9 and lO are transverse sections of the sli-eet shown iii Fig. l on the lines 8, 8, 9, 95 and l0, l0, after the sheet has been passed through the rolls and correspond with Figs. 5, 6 and 7.' Fig. 1l is a plan and'Fig. l2 a transverse section of the sheet after it has been expanded.
In Fig'. 1 the sheet of metal has been divided by the sli't's'li'nto narrow strips a Z), a l), connected together b v rectangular junctions c d, d. The sheet is passed tliroughthe rollers ve e 'as is shown in Figs. 5, 6 and The rolls have conical surfaces f in which S eciiieation ef Letters Patent.
and finally expanding the sheet.

in each pair of rol-ls coperate'together when passing the junctions c at: the ends o`f the pairs of strips, tlY ese junctions beingturned as little as pcssiliile, and the lshallow re-..
cesses 71, coperate together when passing the junctions d connecting the niiddles of the pairs ot strips. The sheet is then expanded and in the finished sheet as shown in Figs. 1l and l2 all the instal hasbeen turned substantially through a right angle and the rows of inesli are in parallel planes as is shown in l? 1Q. The incsh shown is dianiond shaped but it may be inade square by further expansion. l
ln another application l liave'claiined the improved mechanism herein shown and described.
W'hat l claim is: I
l. The precess or" manufacturing expanded metal coi'isisting of forming in a sheet parallel longitudinal rows of slits, the junctions between the ends ot the slits of each row being between the slits of adjacent rows, then turning the adjacent strips oii nppcsite sides et each alternate slit in the saine direction out ot the plane of 1the sheet, and liu'ally expanding the sheet.
2. The process ot manufacturing expanded metal consisting of forming in a sheet parallel longitudinal rows et slits, the junctions between the ends of the slits of each rom1 beiiig between theL slits of adjacentrows, then tin-ning the adjacent strips on opposite sides ot each alternate slit in the saine direction so that one strip is above the plane of the sheet and the other below the saine 3. The process of manufacturing expanded inetal consisting of forming in a sheet parallel longitudinal rows of slits, the juncthe ends of the slits of each row being between the slits ot adjacent rows, then turning theadjacent strips on opposite sides of each alternate slitl and every other row ot junctions all in the saine direction out of the plane ot the sheet but turning the other junctions as little as possible and finally expanding the sheet.
4. The process of manufacturing expanded inetal consisting' of forming iii a sheet parallel longitudinal rows of slits, the junc# tions between the ends of the slits of each between the slits of adjacent rows,
then turning each junction of every other transverse row of junctions together with plane of the sheet and finally expanding the the pair of strips connecting such junction sheet.
' to the ljunctions of the adjacent transverse HARRY SALMON rows to an angle to the plane of the sheet, all such junctions being turned in the saine 4Witnesses:
.drectionlwhile the junctions of the adjacent HENRY SCHOLFIELD,
transverse rows remain substantially in the R. VVESTACOITT.
