WINDOW-SCREEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 10, 1911.

To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, AnuAM D. Bu Visa and Jenn S. MoNTnrrn, citizens of the United States, and residents of Clyde, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in W indow-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to screens for windows and has for its object the provisionof a casing secured to the outside of the W111- dow-fra1ne having an upwardly-extending flange, a spring rewound roller in the casing having the screen-fabric secured thereto, a strip of rigid material secured to the free edge of the screen-fabric that is adapted to be removably secured to the lower rail of the window-sash, the strip being formed with a double portion forming a channel that engages the upwardly-extending flange on the casing when the window-sash is closed to form a substantially weather and dust proof joint for the casing and lower portion of the window-frame.
Our invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the lower fragment of a window-frame showing my improved attachment in position, the screen being shown in its lowermost position in full lines and in a raised position in broken lines; Fig. 2, a cross-section of the frame and screen shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a detail view of the roller shown partly broken away to disclose the spring to rewind it.
In the drawings similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A indicates a window-frame, B the lower sash having the lower rail 6, C the sill, and D the parting stri separating the channels for the upper and lower sashes.
1 indicates a casing mounted on the still C outside of the lower sash, having its upper portion 2 inclined outwardly and down wardly to form a water-shed, said casing being secured in position by means of driven fastenings engaging ends 3 and the sides of the frame A. The inner side of the casing is open toward the lower sash, as shown, while the free edge of the upper portion 2 is formed with an upwardly-extending portion forming a flange 4.
5 indicates a roller journalcd in the ends of easing 1 and having a rewind spring 6 therein and a length 'of wire spring fabric 7 secured thereto and held normally rolled upon the roller by means of said spring.
8 indicates a strip of rigid material having eyelets 9 therein that are adapted to be removably secured to buttons 10 in the lower rail b of the window-sash B, said strip being curved outwardly from the sash and downwardly to engage the outer side of flange 4- when the sash is in its lowermost position. 11 indicates another length of material secured to the inner side of strip 8 and forming a channel with the lower portion of the other strip that incloses the flange when the sash is lowered to form a dust and weather proof joint to protect the inside of casing 1 and to exclude dust and the weather from the inner side of the window-sash.
The free edge of the wire fabric 7 is secured to strip 11 and is so positioned that when the sash is raised the side edges of the screen engage the parting strip D, thereby forming an insect-proof screen covering for the opening made by the raised sash.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is In combination with a window-frame, and a sash mounted in the frame, a casing secured to said frame, and having an upwardly-extending inte 'ral flange on its 11 per portion, a screen-fa ric contained in said casing, a strip of rigid material secured to said fabric and adapted to be removably secured to the sash, and the edge of the strip,
secured to the fabric, formed double and constituting a channel to receive the flange on the upper part of the casing, substantially as shown and described.
