To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTO ROLAND, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at HanovenLinden, in Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looks of the type wherein a key-operated bolt, that is to say a bolt adapted to be retracted by means of a key, is automatically shot into locking position by a spring, when released from a restraining device by the movement imparted to a latch bolt by the act of closing the door.
The invention provides a lock wherein the said restraining device is unaffected by the inward movement of the latch-bolt, but is disengaged by the forward or outward move ment of said latch-bolt. This insures that the key-operated bolt is not released until it is properly in line with the recess provided for it in the keeper.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation showing the interior of the lock, and Fig. 2 an elevation viewed at right angles to the plane of Fig. 1, showing the bolts in front view.
In the drawing a is the latch bolt retracting spindle, apertured for engagement with a handle or door-knob; b is the latch-bolt, to which the pendent dog 0 is pivoted within the recess 0 The latter is somewhat wider than the dog and is out aslant, so that the dog can swing from the perpendicular toward the right of Fig. 1, but cannot swing toward the left. The double armed lever (Z acted on by the spring d engages the notch (Z in the retracted key-operated bolt 6, and thus prevents the shooting of the latter into locking position by the spring f. The recess h in the bolt 6 enables the latter to be locked in the retracted position by the vertical bolt 9 of the small auxiliary lock 2'. The keeper is has spring-pressed plates serving as abutments for the bolts Z) and 6 when they are shot into locking position.
The action of the device is as follows. When on the closing of the door the latch bolt is thrust inward, z'. 6. toward the left of Fig. 1, the dog 0 yields and trips over the lever 03 without moving same. But when the latch bolt shoots forward into the recess in the keeper, the dog, unable to yield, actuates the lever cl and disengages same from the bolt 6, whereupon the latter is shot into locking position by the spring f.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a lock the combination of a latch bolt, a bolt adapted for retraction by a key, a spring operating to thrust said key-operated bolt into locking position, a restraining device which automatically engages the retracted key-operated bolt, and a device actuatable by the outward movement of the latch bolt for disabling said restraining device.
2. In a lock the combination of a latch bolt, a bolt adapted for retraction by a key, a spring operating to thrust said key-operated bolt into locking position, a springpressed restraining lever which automatically engages the retracted keyoperated bolt, and a dog pivoted to the latch bolt so as to have limited movement about its pivot, so that said dog can trip over the restraining lever during inward movement of the latch bolt, but disengages said lever from the key operated bolt during outward movement of the latch bolt.
