comes.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Colts Neck, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and the object of the invention is the provision of a simple and inexpensive device designed to amuse the onlooker and the user.
The device consists essentially in a box having a sliding lid which, when operated or open, automatically projects a figure, such as that of a rat or snake. I-Ieretofore, devices similar to this have been constructed by pivoting a curved snakes body within the box and connecting the same to the lid of the box in such a manner that the snake was projected when the lid was snakes had projecting tongues which were adapted to stick the finger of the operator. These devices were, however, not true to nature, as a snake does not sting, but strikes with his fangs and opens his mouth very widely to do so. The action is more nearly allied to a bite.
It is the object of this invention to produce a device which will not only startle the user and cause considerable amusement, but which will grab the finger of the oper ator in the manner of a snake or rat biting the same, the fangs of the serpent, however, being dull so as to avoid any danger of blood poisoning by breaking the skin with the fangs which might carry germs.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application and in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the box. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device in operative position. Fig. 3 is a detail top plan view with the cover removed and showing the device in operative position.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a comparatively long and narrow box which is provided with a sliding door or lid 2 held in place and guided in its movements by the ribs 3 and provided upon its upper inner end with a finger nail notch 4 by which the lid may be opened.
Mounted in the box and extending across the same are a pair of shafts 5 and 6, upon Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 22, 1911.
Patented July 11, 1911. Serial No. 616,125.
the former of which is pivoted a curved body 7 whose outer end is formed to represent a stationary jaw 8 of a serpent or an animal. This jaw is transversely slotted, as shown at 9, and pivoted in the jaw is an operating lever 10 which is rigidly connected at one end to the movable jaw 11 which, with the stationary jaw, is provided with dulled fangs 12. The opposite end of the lever is connected, by a cable or other flexible element 13, to the box and the is limited in its opening movement by a stop 14 carried by the body 7. A bifurcated link 15 is pivotally connected to the body 7 below the shaft 5 and the opposite end of the links is also bifurcated so as to straddle and have a pivotal connection with the lower end of an operating lever 16 which is journaled upon the shaft 6. This operating lever and the body 7 are prevented from lateral movement upon the shafts 5 and 6 by means of the adjustable collars 17. The upper end of the lever 16 is flexibly connected to the under side of the lid by a cable or cord 18 so that, when the lid is withdrawn from the box, the cord 18 will operate the lever to raise the body to the position shown in Fig. 2. As the body is raised the cable 13 is put under tension and the lever 10 operated to close the jaw 11. As the jaws close directly over the finger nail opening it will be seen that a person in withdrawing the lid will have his forefinger grabbed between the jaws.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a device of the class described, a box, a sliding lid therefor having a finger catch therein, a curved member pivoted in the box, a connection between the curved member and the lid for projecting said member when the lid is open, and means carried by the curved member and connected to the box for clamping the operators finger against the curved member when the curved member is projected by the opening of the lid.
2. In a device of the class described, a box, a sliding lid therefor, a jaw member pivoted in the box and adapted to be projected therefrom when the lid is operated, operating mechanism connecting the jaw and lid, a movable jaw carried by the jaw member, and means for clamping the movable jaw against the jaw member when the lid is operated.
3. In a device of the class described, :1 jaw upon the curved body When the lid is 10 box, a sliding lid therefor, a curved body operated.
