CHAIN-SAW MORTISER ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIoToR .VARIN, a sub ject of the King of Great Britain, residing in the city and district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain-Saw Mortiser Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The inventionv to be hereinafter described relates to chain saw mortising machines, and particularly to an attachment for varying the depth of the cut mortise.
Broadly speaking, it comprises a support adapted to be adjustably connected to the table or moving work support of the machine, and a spacing block connected to the support and adapted to operate with the automatic belt shifting mechanism.
In order to more clearly disclose the con struction, operation and use of the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present application.
Throughout the several figures of the drawings, like reference characters designate the same parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an end elevation of a well known form of chain saw mortising machine; Fig. 2 is an enlarged end elevation of the preferred form of the attachment as applied to the machine shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the attachment shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of a modified form of the attachment; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a block with one form of simple mortise; and, Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a block with two mortises of different depths.
The main object of the invention is to provide an attachment whereby several different depths of mortises may be automatically regulated, at will, so that when the belt shifting mechanism has been once set, there will be no further need for adjustment. 7 In order to more clearly disclose the use 'of the attachment, it will be advisable to give a brief disclosure of the main features of the well known chain. mortising machines now on the market.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 indicates the framework of the machine, of usual and well known construction. On this framework is slidably mounted the table or work-support 2, adapted to be reciprocated toward and from the chain saw 3 in the usual manner by the threaded rod 4:. This rod is driven from a shaft 5 provided with two fixed pulleys 6 and 7 and one loose pulley 8. The shaft 5 is driven by a belt from the pulley 9 fixed to the power shaft 10. A crossed belt 11 drives a pulley 12 fixed to a countershaft 13. The belt 11 is driven from the pulley 14C fixed to the power shaft 10. Consequently, the countershaft 13 will be driven in a direction reverse to the power shaft 10. A second pulley 15 fixed to the countershaft 13 acts as a driving means for a belt connecting it with the loose pulley 8. With the belts in the positions shown in Fig. 1, we will assume that the threaded rod 4 will be rotated to cause upward travel of the table 2. As the table reaches the upward limit of its travel, the arm 16 will engage the block 17 on the slidable rod 18, causing the rod to move upward. -As the rod moves upwardly, it will operate the belt shifting lever 19 and cause the belts to be moved to the right, so thatthe rotation of the rod 1 will' be reversed and the table lowered. According to this machine which is now on the market, it is possible to make mortises ofonly one predetermined depth in a single adjustment. 7
The main object of this invention is to provide an attachment which will permit the cutting of a second depth of mortise without a second adjustment of the automaticmechanism.
, Referring particularly to Figs. 2, 3 and 4, 20 indicates a rod slidably and adjustably mounted in eyes 21 extending from the work table. On this rod are slidably mount-' sired to out two mortises of different depths, the regular automatic mechanism will be set to operate the belt shifting mechanism for the cut of greatest depth. Then the attachment will be swung to its full line position in Figs. 2 and 3, and the blocks 25 will be adjusted along the rod 18 to engage the lower block 17 soon enough to effect shifting of the belts for the shallower mortise. In this way, it is possible to cut a shallower mortise of a predetermined depth by simply swinging the yoke 24: into operative position after the blocks 25 have been properly adjusted. Two blocks 25 are used, in order to give a variety of adjustment. \Vith only one block 25 the difference in depth of the two mortises would only equal the thickness of the one block. With two blocks, however, one may be adjusted toward or from the other in order to vary this difference, as desired.
When only the deeper mortise is desired, the-attachment may be swung to the dotted line position of Fig. 3.
The rod 20 is provided with grips 28 for raising it either by the foot, knee or hand.
A second form of invention is disclosed in Fig. 1. In this form, a pivoted block 30 takes the place of the adjustable blocks 25. This block is pivoted to the table or work support and has a sliding pivotal connection with the upper end of a rod 31 moving in eyes 32 on the support. This rod is kept normally raised or inoperative by means of a spring 33 connected at its opposite ends respectively to the work support or table and to a block 3 1 fixed to the rod 31. By means of a treadle 35, the rod 31 and its block 30 may be moved downward so that the block will fall into operative position.
It is thought that the operation and use of the invention will be clear from the preceding detailed description.
Changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and disposition of the several parts of the invention, without in any way departing from the field and scope of the same, and it is meant to include all such within this application, wherein only preferred forms have been disclosed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a chain saw mortising machine,a movably mounted work support, means for reciprocating the work support, mechanism for driving said means, a belt shifter for reversing said driving mechanism, a slidably mounted rod, connections between said rod and said belt shifter, a stop block adjustably mounted on said rod, an arm connected to the aforesaid work support and adapted to engage said block, a rod movably connected to said work support, and means carried by said rod and adapted to be interposed between the aforesaid stop block and said arm.
2. In combination wit-h a chain saw mortising machine, a movably mounted work support, means for reciprocating the work support, mechanism for driving said means a belt shifter for reversing said driving mechanism, a slidably mounted rod, connection between said rod and said belt shifter, a stop block adjustably mounted on said rod, an arm connected to the aforesaid work support and adapted to engage said block, a rod adjustably connected to said 'work support, and means carried by said rod and adapted to be interposed between the aforesaid stop block and said arm.
3. In combination with a chain saw mortising machine, a movably mounted work support, means for reciprocating the work support, mechanism for driving said means, a belt shifter for reversing said driving mechanism, a slidably mounted rod, connections between said rod and said belt shifter, a stop block adjustably mounted on said rod, an arm connected to the aforesaid work support and adapted to engage said block, a rod movably connected to said work support, a yoke extending from said rod, and meanscarried by said yoke and adapted to be interposed between the aforesaid stop block and said arm.
