TYPE-WRITIN G MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Original application filed April 30, 1904, Serial No. 205,718. Divided and this application filed May 23,
Patented June 27, 1911.
1906. Serial No.- 318,367.
I To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL GABRIELSON, a
. citizen of the United States, and residentof Syracuse, Onondaga county,'State of New ork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TypeWVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This application is a division of my application Serial Number 205,718 filed April 30, 1904.
' The invention mounting of the machine and the ing devices.
he invention will be particularly 'described in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a rear view partly in section of a portion of a typewriting machine sutficient to illustrate the present invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the bell supporting bracket and the device for operating the bell hammer; and Fig 3 is ,a partial side elevation.
Referring to the drawing, 1. indicates the top plate of the fixed frame of a typewriting machine, 2 a portion of the carriage, 3 the carriage rack, 41 the escape wheel of the carriage feed mechanism and 5 the rocker which carries the escape pawls which cooperate with the wheel 4. A rock shaft 6, which is not longitudinally adjustable or movable, is rocked slightly as the carriage nears the end of its travel by devices which need not be described in this specification. This rock shaft carries an arm 7 to which is connected a. depending vertically movable rod 8 having a shoulder 9 adapted to bear upon an arm 10 of the bell hammer 11. By these means the bell hammer is raised when the shaft 6 is rocked and permitted to drop when the reverse movement of the shaft 6 takes place.
The bell 12 is. mounted upon a bracket 13 which is connected to a the frame and adjustable thereon in an upand-down direction. As shown, the bracket relates particularly to the alarm bell on a typewriting adjustment of the bell ringfixed part 14 of 13 is in the form of a lever pivoted at 15 and secured in place by a screw 16 passing through the slot 17in the lever and into the fixed part 14. The bell is fixed to an arm 18 of the bracket 13, and the free end of the .bracket 19 is U-shaped, forming a yoke in is pivoted. The belt which the bell hammer hammer preferably has a U-shaped portion 20fforming aninverted yoke and a pivot 21 .passes through the yokes l9 and 20. A light spring 22 is preferably provided to assist in the striking movement of the bell hammer, although the hammer erated by gravity if desired."
As .prcviously stated the bell hammer is raised when the shaft 6 is rocked in one direction and dropped when the shaft 6 is quickly operated in the reverse direction. The means for operating described in the aforesaid application, Serial Number 205,718. of which this application is a division. By providing a support for the bell and its hammer which is adjustable with relation to the hammer operating device, the stroke of the bell" hammer can be adjusted quickly and satisfactorily without disconnecting 0r disarranging any of the bell ringing mechanism.
It will be evident that various changes in details of construction may be adopted without. departing from the the present invention.
Without limiting myself to the construction and arrangement illustrated and described, I claim,
1.. In a typewriting machine, tion with a fixed frame and a horizontally arranged rock-shaft, of a bell support car.- ried by said frame, av bell and bell hammer carried by said support. and a connection of said rock-shaft arranged to operate the bell hammer when the shaft is rocked, said bell support being adjustable toward and away from said rock-shaft and connection where by the stroke of the hammer may be readily adjusted.
2. In a typewriting machine. the combination with the fixed frame, ota lever pivoted may be opthe shaft are fully I precise the coinbinaspirit and scope of to said frame at oneend and provided with In testimony whereof I a fiix my signature aslot intermediate its ends, a clamping in presence of two Witnesses.
screw passing through said slot into said' I I frame, a bell mounted on said lever, a bell ,CARL GABRIELSON' 5 hammer pivotally connected to the free end Witnesses:
of said lever, and a part cotiperating with C. M. STEVENS,
said bell hammer to ring the bell. I 0. F. PARS
