To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BANOVITCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cartersville, in the county of Cumberland and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Tile-Molding 'Apparatus of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to apparatus adapted to be used for molding tiles especially intended to be applied upon roofs and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and an eflicient apparatus of the character indicated which may be readily used for forming comparatively7 thin tiles with thinned portions thereof cut away so that the tile may overlap when applied to the rafters of a roof.
With :this object in view the apparatus includes a frame having at its upper portion a trough adapted to contain the mortar or other material from which the tile is formed and also provided with an opening about the edges of which is adapted to be secured a mold adapted to form the edges of the tile. The frame is also provided with a hinged section adapted to coperate with said mold and which when in closed position forms a portion of the mold. The said hinged section is so mounted that it may be swung away in orderthat the tile may be removed from the frame. A vertically movable platen is also mounted upon the frame and is located under the opening at which the tile is formed and a means is provided for holding the said platen in proper position with relation to the edge molding form.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of thel platen forming a part of the apparatus, viewing the same upon the under side. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a inold form adapted to be used for forming the ridge tile of a roof structure. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a form adapted to be used for shaping the edges of the roof tiles.
The tile molding apparatus includes a 2 which is adapted to contain the cement,
mortar or other material from which the tile is formed. The frame 1 is provided in its top and adjacent one of the edges of the trough 2 with an opening 3 which is bounded about its edges by ledges 4. A section 5 is hinged to the upper portion of the frame 1 and is adapted to form one side of the opening 3 in the top thereof and this section 5 is provided with a ledge 6 which registers with the ledges 4 mounted upon the fixed side portions of the opening 3. A bolt 7 is pivotally connected with the free end of the pivoted section 5 and is adapted to enter a slot provided in a keeper' 8 which is attached to the upper portion of the frame 1. A wing nut 9 is screw-threaded upon the end portion of the bolt 7 and is adapted to bear against the side of the keeper 8 in a manner as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, whereby the said hinged section 5 is held in closed position against the ends of the bounding portions of the frame of the opening 3 therein. A form 10 is adapted to fit snugly within the opening 3 provided in the top of the frame 1 and is provided at one end with a recess 11 and at the other end with an undercut shoulder 12.
In connection with the frame as above described a. platen 13 is employed, the said platen having upon its upper side a portion 14 which stands up in relief and when the platen is in position below the opening 3 is adapted to project up into the said opening when its upper surface is in the same plane as the upper surfaces of the ledges 4 at the sides of the opening 3 and the ledge 6 pro' vided upon the hinged section 5. Guide rods 15 are secured at their lower edge to the said platen 13 and are slidably passed through the opposite side portions of the upper part of the frame 1 as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. A screw 16 also passes vertically through one of the side port-ions of the upper part of the frame 1 and a securing nut 17 is screw-threaded upon the said screw. At its lower end the screw 16 is connected with a flexible member 18 which is located below the under side of the platen 13 and extends across the same in the manner as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. A strut19 is mounted upon a strip 20 which extends transversely across the under side of theplaten 13 and the lower end of the said strut bears against the intermediate portion of the fiexible member 18. Thus the end of the flexible member 18 opposite from theend thereof which is connected with the screw 16 is attached directly to the under side of the platen 13 so that the said flexible member 18 straddles the strut 19 and the intermediate portion thereof is held away from the under side of the platen 13 as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
From the above description it will be seeny that when the platen 13 is elevated the upper surface of its relief portion 14 is in the same plane as the upper surfaces of the ledges 4 and 6. Thus by screwing the nut 7 down along the screw 16 until the lower face of the said nut comes in contact with the upper surface of the side portion of the frame 1 the flexible member 18 will be drawn slightly in a longitudinal direction which will bind the edge portion of the relief part 14 of the platen 13 against the adjacent edge of o-ne of the ledges 4 whereby the said platen will be held in an elevated position. An operative will then spread the material over the relief portion of the platen 13 and tamp the said material down so that it passes under the undercut shoulder 12 of t-he form 10; The material is then smoothed off even with the upper face of the form 10 and is permitted to harden. After the tile has been suiiiciently solidified the nut 9 is loosened and the bolt 7 is swung out of engagement wit-h the slot of the keeper 8 and the hinged section 5 of the frame 1 is swung to one side. When this is done all obstruc tion is removed from one edge of the tile and the tile may be readily slipped from off of the relief portion 14 of the platen 13 with comparatively thin flanges formed at its opposite ends by the recess 11 and undercutl shoulder 12 of the form 10. A shelf 21 is also provided at the upper portion of the frame 1 and an approximately V-shaped mold section 22 is hingedly attached to said shelf. The shelf 21 is provided upon its upper side with upstanding pins 23 which are adapted to enter recesses 24 provided in an approximately triangular-shaped mold section 25. The sides of the mold section 22 are hinged together as at 26 and the ends of the mold section 22 are closed by end pieces -27 which overlap the ends of the said side pieces of the mold. By this arrangement the side pieces of the mold may be swung toward each other and by positioning of sections 25 of different angles in transverse section upon the shelf 21 the said sections 25 and mold section 22 may be used for forming tiles adapted to be applied to the ridges of a gable roof irrespective of the angles existing between the opposite sides of the roof. By this arrangement it will be seen that a simple and an effective apparatus is provided whereupon tiles especially adapted to be used for roofing purposes may be economically made and by reason of the simplicity of the structure this apparatus may be conveniently transported from place to place.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V
1. An apparatus for molding tile comprising a frame having at its upper side an opening provided about its edges with inwardly disposed ledges, a hinged section of the frame forming a bounding side for said opening, and a form adapted to fit snugly within the opening and rest upon the ledges thereof, said form being open at one side and the said hinged section of the frame forming a closing barrier for the openV side of the form.
2. An apparatus for molding tile comprising a frame having at its upper portion an opening provided about its edges with inwardly disposed ledges, a hinged'section of the frame forming one of the bounding sides of said opening, a form fitting snugly in the opening and resting upon the ledges at the sides thereof, said form having at one end a recess and at its other end an undercutshoulder, said fo-rm being open at one side and the said hinged section of the frame forming a barrier for the open side of the form. i
3. An apparatus for molding tile comprising a frame having an opening at its upper side, the bounding portions of the frame about said opening having inwardly disposed ledges, said frame havinga hinged section which forms a bounding 'side for said opening, a form fitting snugly in the opening of the frame and resting upon the ledges at the frame about the sides of said opening, said form being op-en at one side and said hinged section; of the frame forming a barrier Vforthe open sideof the said form, a platen supported by the frame and having an inner portion standing up in ref lief the plane of the surface of which is adapted to lie in the same plane as the upper surfaces of the said ledges.

An apparatus for molding tile comprising a frame having at its upper portion an opening, the portions of the frame about said opening having inwardly dis-V posed ledges, said frame having a hinged section which forms one of the bounding sides of said opening, a'form fitting snugly in the opening and resting upon the ledges about the bounding sides of said opening, a platen sup-ported by the frame, a. flexible member located under the platen and secured at one end to the platen, a strut located on the platen and bearing against the intermediate portion of said flexible member, a 'screw passing through one side as my own, I have hereto affixed my signaof the fra-me and connected at its lower ture in the presence of two witnesses. end with said flexible member, and a nut screwed upon the upper portion of the said JOSEPH BANOVITCH' screw and adapted to bear at its lower face Witnesses: against the upper side of the frame.
