To all whom it may cectcern:
Be it known that we, lrisnsnsnn A. Qi mn and LYMAN C. S'rrmnurr, citizens of the United. States, residing at Roanoke, in county of Roanoke and State of 'R irginia, hsve'inveuted certain new and useful lmprovcments in Culverts, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to on improvement in culverts, and the objectis to provide a nestable culvert so that it can be shipped and hauled in a knock-clown condition.
A further object is in the provision of. means for fastening; the two sections of the culvert together, which accomplished by n'icans or" flanges which are bent together, and then bent to a vertical position, thereby preventing any possibility of the two half. sections spreading or springing apart.
The invention further ctmsists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which \vi 1 be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings :-l igure lis a top plan view showing the two half sections placed together, Fig. 2 is a sectional View on the line 2 of 1, Fig. is a sectional view on the line 3 of Fig. 1, l is a sectional view on the line l: of 1, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line of Fig. 1.
A, represents the culvert sections, which are made preferably of circuiar, corrugated metal. The uppermost. section is provided with its edges l. extending; outwardly, end the lower section has its ed n outwardly, but the cuatwaidly-r' edges are ,e rea 'er width than the the edges l upper sections.
. t 1 ot the wartlly-extend1ng edges .2 of the lower sec.- tion are boot up *ardly as indicated in -i 2, and then bent over upon edges 3. thupper section, as indicated in predetermined distances, pro t apart, the edges are slittetl, as at 3, 3, to" ing lips or tongues and 5 on the up 5e lower sections respectively. The lips or tongues are folded in the some manner that the edges 1 andfl of the two sections are folded. The lips then bent to is vertical position, either up or down, as indicated in Figs. iand 5. Certain of the lips will be bent upwardly, and others bent downwardly, In this way, the danger of the sections springing apart, is obviated, end a tighter and firmer connection is formed between the two sections of the culvert. The arrangement of the flanges can var: for instance, two lips mightbe bentvertically, as indicated in Fig. the next two, downwa'rdly, or they could be alternately ar ranged to suit the conditions or purposes for which the culvert is to be used, or in fact all one side of the. section could he bent. in one direction, and the other side in the opposite direction. With the edges 1 and, 2 being fastened together, and then by the. provision of lips which are formed in the same manner that the edges are folded together, and then bending the lies to a vertical position,
. the two sections of the pipe section will be securely connected together.
in the goinin o' of several pipe sections to gether, the sections would he preferably so 7 ranged in staggered. relation so that sections could he joined together, as for instance assuming that an. upper section vss overhunging a lower section, and the joining of a. lower section was made to the lowersection, the circular corrugations would aliow for the overlapping of the ends of the two lower sections, and the lips or flanges S ot the new lower section could he brought into relation with the lips .i-. of the overhanqiug upper section, whee-by the lips i and 5 could he joined for fastening the new section to the overhsn iug upper section; and this would he j flying an upper section so Having fully (i rihed our invention,
