GEORGE L. MANSELL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
STOVEPIPE-THIMBLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 13, 1911.
Application filed July 20, 1910. Serial No. 572,879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. MANSELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Thimbles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for securing stove pipes in chimneys, the object being to provide a usual device of this character which shall be simple of construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and efficient in operation.
WVith this object in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in whic Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in its preferred form, and Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof showing a portion of a chimney and a stove pipe secured therein by means of a thimble in accordance with my invention.
The preferred form of my invention as illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises a cylindrical sheet metal thimble 1 having a longitudinal slit 2 formed in the periphery thereof. A plurality of projections 3 are provided at one end of the thimble 1 which are formed into lips after said thimble is inserted in the chimney. These projections are provided with recesses in their lateral edges for a purpose to be described hereinafter. A flange 5 curved in cross-section is secured to the thimble 1 by means of a flange 6 formed in the outer edge thereof, the flange 5 having an opening therein to correspond with the slit 2. Perforated lugs 7 are provided in the flange 5 adjacent the opening therein, and passing through these lugs is a screw-bolt 8 by means of which the ends of said flange may be drawn together. A circumferential corrugation 9 is formed in the body of the thimble 1 with which the corrugation 10 of an ordinary stove pipe 11 is adapted to register. The thimble l is secured in the ordinary thimble 12 of the chimney after insertion therein by first bending over the projections 3 forming lips and then applying mortar 12 to the inside of the chimney 13, as shown, it being apparent that the mortar will flow into the recesses 4 and serve as an additional securing means. The thimble is now fast at its inner end and is ready to receive a stove pipe. WVhen the stove pipe 11 is inserted in position so that the corrugation 10 thereof registers with the corrugation 9 the nut of the screw-bolt 10 is tightened which causes said stove pipe to be securely clamped in position. Not only is the stove pipe held rigidly in position but owing to the tight connection with the thimble 1 leakage of soot and smoke is prevented.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my improved stove pipe thimble I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various modifications made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts described without departing from the spirit of my invention, and hence I desire to avail myself of such changes and modifications as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a device of the character described, a chimney, a sheet metal cylindrical thimble having a plurality of recessed projections at one end thereof and a longitudinal slit in its periphery at the other end, the said projections being bent outwardly over the inside of said chimney and embedded in mortar thereon, a circumferential corrugation formed adjacent the other end of said thimble, a stove pipe having a corrugation adapted to receive said thimble corrugation, a curved flange having adjoining ends secured to said thimble, and means for drawing said ends together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE L. MANSELL.
