This invention relates toa machine by means of which raisers ot' stock-can cut and bind their' cornstalks in shocks in the field, thus making it available for cattle-f'odler during winter. This operation is performed with my machine in avery expeditious manner, and with less expense for hand-labor than is done by other machines devised for this purpose.
I construct a platform, A, the forward part of which is hung on the wheels B and B', the wheel B being a driving-wheel, and may Vhave corrugations or teeth ou its circumference, in order to catch in the ground.
To the hub ofthe wheel B is attached a cog-wheel, C, which meshes into the pinion C', on sha-ft On this same shaft is placed the bevel-wheel E, meshing into the bevel-wheel E', o n 4shaf't F.
At the lower end of this shaft F, is adapted the double-grooved pulley G, from which a rope or twisted belt, y, Cmnmunicates motion to the cutter H.v
Over this cutter H is built a. small platform, I, terminatiug forward in the shape of a fork, one side of' which forms a knife-edge, h, or a cutting-edge may be fastened thereto, vso that the cutter H, in revolving, will form a shear with each tof` its four blades as they come in .rotation against the sharp edge h.
' On the platforni I are constructed a double'set of carrying-belts, J J J J, into which spikes K K K are inserted.
lhese belts J J J J receive their motion through a 4a rope or twisted belt- 'rom the -donblc-grooved pulley G, which drives one of' the upright shattsJJ L L L.
To the lower end of/this shaft, and under the platlform I, is fastened a cog-wheel, M, which meshes into another cog-wheel of the same size on the next upright shaft.
Back of' the carrying-belts J J J J, and at the rear' v endl of' the platform A, is constructed a railing fence, N, havingjn it a gate, N', swinging open backward.
Forward of the machine, and over the axle-tree, is l au apparatus for twisting ropes of straw or hay. 1t is composed ofthe box 0, th'e revolving clamp P,.and the pressure-foot Q.
The revolving clamp P has ou it a grooved pulley, It, from which a belt passes ou to a similar pulley on shaft D.
A caster-wheel or roller, U, is adapted, under the rear part of' the platform A, to support its weight, and that ofthe corn-stalks.
'lo operate the machine, it is drawn over a corn-fieldby a team ot' horses, in a manner similar to a reapingmachine, the machine cutting a single rowof' cornstalks at each passage; and the stalks, as fast as they are out, are seized by the carrying-belts J J J J, which carry them in an uprightposition backward, and finally deposit them against the railing N. This is continued until the operator judges the quantity sutiicient to f'orm a shock, when he stops the machine, and, by means of astraw rope, which has been previouslylaid on hooks along the railing N, he ties all the stalks on the plat-- 4form A into a bundle or shock; then he opens the gate N', and passing a rope, S, which is fastened on the platform A, forward of' the bundleor shock, thence around backward through the gate N', he pulls the bundle out through the gate., and deposits it ou the ground upright, and in a condition which requires no more attention until'actually needed for fodder.
a My machine differs from other machines devised for cutting corn-stalks, in this, that after the passing ot' the machine over lthe ground, aud'with only two attendant-s, the stalks are, cut, tied in a shock, and placed on the ground upright, requiring no further attention, a result which h-as not been obtained with any machine Vhitherto known;- and also by having combined with it amps-spinning apparatus. Y
What I claim as new in toy-invention, auddesire to secure oy-Letters Iateu'tf is'- 1. .'lhe combination ofthe revolvingcutter H, horizontal carrying-helts J, railing N, gate N' platform I, dischargerope S, bevel-gear E and E', cords or bands g, upright 'shafts-L and L, and the main platform A,
arranged, operating, -aud constructed as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The rope-spinning apparatus, composed of the box O, 'the revolving clamp P, and the pressure-foot Q, when forming part of a machine for cutting cornstalks in the field, substantially as described. J. H. L. TUGK.
