Specification of LettersPatent.
Patented June 6, 1911.
Application filed July 10, 1909; serial No. 506,976.
j To'all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HOWARD of Great Britain and Ireland, and resi ing at 48 London street, Norwich, in the county of orfolk, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Starting Motors on -Motor-Oars from the Drivers Seat or Footboard, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices by which the motor upon a motor car can be started ment with a ratchet shaft.' Theobject of' from the drlvers seat or footboard by the -driver merelyjdepressing a pedal, and there by throwing a driving pawl into engage wheel on the motor th'isjinvention is to improve the apparatus above referred to in er to avoid shook being transmitted to 'the drivers' foot in back firing 'while it consists in the event of the motor isbeing started, and it providing a stop or buffer in such a position that it arrests the starting device and automatically withdraws the driving pawl when the device is rotated in the firing.
' f Reference will now be made companying drawings'in which, L Figures 1 and 2 are a front and rear View respectively showing the starting device in a position assumed when a backfire occurs. Fig.3 is a fragmentary side View. In the .drawings a device of the type befo'rejmentioned is illustrated, comprising a ratchet wheel, 6, keyed upon a motor shaft, a, apawl, d, pivotedjto' a plate, 0, which is free to be oscillated about the shaft, 4, by means of a foot rod, is, the latto the ac# operative stroke is adapted to engage the ar, g,j;on the the ratchet wheel, b. The foot rod, is, may
reverse'direction due to the motor back ter having a toe, Z, which atthe end-of the- 2', so that What I d, In engagement Withalso be locked in itsdepressed position byboss, 0, formed integrally with or connected to the plate, a, the spring, 97., having one end secured to. a hook, p, on the grooved boss, 0, while the other end is hooked on to a stationary pin, g. -..By this arrangement, the spring is able to pull at a tangent to the boss, 0, in all posit ons of the plate, 0, so that the leverage at which it pulls does not vary.
According to the present invention also a buffer or stop, 1-, tion that in the event of the motor-tackfiring while being started, the rod, k', strikes the buffer, r, which causes the rod, la, to move about its pin, 8, and to thereby bring a heel, 25, into engagement with a small leits end, 1:, to withdraw the pawl, 0?, through the medium of the rod, h. In th starting device is released from the motor and no damage is done to it.
By providlng a rubber pad or the like upon the' bufi'er any shock which otherwise occur is avoided. In'Fig. l the device is indicated in one might posltlon in dotted lines with the pawl, (Z, in
engagement with the ratchet wheel, 6, this being one position which it occupies during the starting ndwhile the footrod, k, is being depressed.
Should backfire occur, the ratchet wheel,
7), drives the plateupwardly into the p0si-- tion indicated'in full lines, in which position, however, the buff causes the release of the pawl, d.
Instead of employing a rubber. or like'pad upon the buffer a spring or dash pot may be adopted in order to cushion any shock' which may occur. Having now described my invention. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device for starting motors onfl-motor is arranged in such a posi-f er/r, immediately ver, u, so as to cause the latter by means of is way the cars, comprising in combination, a ratchet wheel secured to the motor shaft,"a pivoted on said shaft, .a pawl; carrie said plate and adapted to engage.
