To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, EDVARD M. MoLLnn, a subject of the King of Norway, residing at Hoboken, in'the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Passenger- Gars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference, generally, to improvements in door-operating mechanisms for the platforms of railway cars; and, the invention relates, more particularly, to a novel arrangement of door or doors for the rear platforms of that class of street-railway cars, known as pay-as-you-enter cars, or enter and pay-within cars.
The present invention relates, furthermore, to a novel mechanism for operating a pair of hinged or foldably arranged doorsections, which when the entrance and exitportions of the platform are free or open stand in their folded relation in a plane eX- tending laterally across the platform, that is in a direction from side to side of the carbody, but when the entrance and exit-portions at the step of the platform are closed, the said hinged or foldably connected doors standing in an extended or opened-out relation in a plane extending in a longitudinal direction of the body of the car and at the side of the platform of the car, at or near the step-portion of the platform.
The present inventon, therefore, has for its principal objects to provide in connection with the types of street-railway cars known as pay-as-you-enter cars, and the enter and pay-within cars, a novel arrangement and simple and efficient construction of door or doors and mechanism for operating the same, so as to open or close the door or doors, said mechanism being under the perfect control of the conductor.
Other objects of this invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of my present invention. The present invention consists, primarily, in the novel door or doors for the platforms of street railway cars, as well as in a novel mechanism for operating the same, and of the character hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which form an essential part of this specification. The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of the rear platform of a car, looking toward the car-body, and showing in elevation the folded arrangement of the door-sections, when the door has been opened, and said view illustrating, furthermore, in elevation one form of mechanism operated by the conductor for opening and closing the door. Fig. 2 is a diagrammatical horizontal sectional representation of the vestibule of the platform and a portion of the car-body, the platform, as well as the door-sections and the door-operating mechanism being moved from the top, said View showing the doorsections in their separated relations when in the respective positions for closing both the in and out or entrance and eXit portions a the side of the car-platform. Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the main body of the usual type of street-railway passenger car, and 2 indicates the end-wall of said body, said end-wall having a large opening 3 which provides the usual entrance from the rear platform 4 into the interior of the car-body. At the one side, the said platform is provided with a step 5, and the reference-character 6 indicates the frame-work of the vestibule which incloses the said platform. The platform may also be provided with any suitably formed dividing rail, as 7, which divides the platform into an in or entrance portion and an out or exit- p0rtion 9, and 10 indicates a fare-receiving box of any usual construction, such as is ordinarily placed upon the platforms of cars of the pay as you enter type.
The position of the conductor is at one side of the fare-receiver and in close proximity to a lever or handle for operating the door-opening and closing mechanism in the manner to be hereinafter more fully described.
The platform hood is indicated by the ref erence- character 11, and 12 represents one of the rafters for supporting said hood.
Suitably secured to the rafters 12 is a suit-- able bar or plate-like element, as 13, to which are suitably secured and extend clownwardly therefrom a pair of brackets 14 and 15. Suitably secured to the lower portion of the said bracket 14 is a laterally extending track or rail 16, said track or rail terminating at a point approximately above the step 5 of the platform, said end-portion of the track or rail being suitably secured to and supported by the members 17 and 18 which form parts of the hood-supporting construction. Suitably secured to the said members 17 and 18 are a pair of tracks or rails, as 19 and 20, said tracks or rails 19 and 20 being located at points approxi mately above the step 5, and extending longitudinally of the main body of the car, said tracks or rails 19 and 20 being respectively formed near the track or rail 16 with the curved end- portions 22 and 23 which terminate on opposite sides of the track or rail 16, and in close proximity thereto, as
clearly indicated in the several figures of the drawings.
The door consists, essentially, of a pair of door- sections 24 and 25, said doors being foldably connected by means of hinges 26, see Fig. 1 of the drawings, and an upper hinge 27, one of the hinge-plates of said hinge 27 being made with a tubular member or hub 28. Movably arranged in said tubular member 28, so as to be adapted to oscillate therein, is a pin or stem 30 of a hub 29, said hub 29 resting upon the tubular member 28 and the parts being retained in their assembled relation by a suitable pin, as 31, arranged in and extending directly across the stem 30 beneath the tubular member 0r hub 28, substantially as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Extending upwardly from said hub- 29, and at the one side of the rail or track 16, is a bracket-like post or arm 32, formed at one side with a bifurcated portion 33, and upon its opposite side with a framelike element 34 forming the carriage of a pair of grooved wheels or rollers 35 which are mounted and are adapted to roll upon the upper edge of the said laterally extending track or rail 16. The said bifurcated portion 33 carries a pin or pintle 36, with which is pivotally connected, in any suitable manner, the one end-portion of a link or rod 37. The opposite end-portion of the said link or rod 37 is pivotally connected by means of a pin 38 with an end of a short arm or link 39, which in turn is pivotally connected at its opposite end-portion by means of a pin 40 with a suitably formed bracket, as 41, which is suitably secured to and extends at the proper place from the end-wall 2 or other suitable part of the car body. Suitably secured upon the platform is a post or standard, as 42, to which is suitably secured and is mounted thereon a yokeshaped member or element, as 43, said member or element being provided with a bearing-portion 44. Extending from the bracket 15, and in alinement with the bearing-portion 44, is a bearing-portion 45. Oscillatorily mounted in said bearing- portions 44 and 45 is a rod or stem 46, said rod or stem 46 being arranged within a tubular member or pipe 47, substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Suitably secured upon the lower end-portion of the rod or stem 46 which extends below the bearing-portion 44 is the operating or actuating handle or lever 48, hereinbefore mentioned, and suitably secured upon the upper end-portion of the rod or stem 46 which extends above the bearing-portion 45, is a crank or lever 49 which is provided with a stud or pivot-post 50. A connecting rod or link 51 is pivotally connected at one end with said stud or pivot 50, said rod or link 51 being pivotally connected at its other end by means of a stud or pivot-post 52 with the previously mentioned link or rod 37. The operation of these various parts will be self-evident from an inspection of Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawln 's.
lieferring now to Figs. 2 and s, a Will be seen, that the said door- sections 24 and 25, are provided at their upper edges with suitable plates, as 53, each plate being formed with an upwardly extending socket 54L. Pivotally arranged in each socket 54 is a pintle or pivot-post 55, the upper end portion of each post 55 extending into and being suitably secured in a bearing-portion or receiving socket 57 of a carriage 56. Said carriages of which there are two, one for each rail or track 19 and 20, are provided with laterally extending pins, as 58, and mounted upon each pin 58 is a grooved wheel or roller 59. Each carriage is preferably provided with two of such wheels or rollers 59, and each pair of rollers or wheels 59 of the respective carriages 56 is placed in rolling contact upon the upper edges of the respective rails or tracks 19 and 20.
From an inspection of the several figures of the drawings, it will be clearly evident, that by the proper manipulation of the handle or lever 48, and the arrangement of the wheels or rollers 35 upon the laterally extending track or rail 16, and the wheels or rollers 59 upon the respective curved and longitudinally extending tracks or rails 19 and 20, the door- sections 24 and 25 can be brought into their folded and opened position with relation to the entrance and exit-portions of the platform, or they can be brought into their extended and closed position with relation to said entrance and exit-portions of the platform. The said doorsections 2d and 25, if desired, may be provided with handles or gripping devices, as 60.
If desired, the said door-sections 2t and 25, as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 4 and 5, may be brought into their opened and closed positions by means of pneumatic or air-controlled devices. One form of such air-controlled devices is diagrammatically represented in Fig. 4; of the drawings, and comprises a cylinder 61 in which is slidably arranged a piston or plunger 62, said piston or plunger being provided with a piston-rod 63 which extends through a closed end-portion or head of said cylinder 61, and is operatively connected with the frame-like element or carriage 34L carrying the wheels or rollers 85 which roll upon the rail or track 16. The reference-character 64 indicates a suitably constructed compressed air-receiving device or controller, which is provided with a suitably formed two-way valve, operated by means of a suitable handle or lever 65. An air-inlet pipe 66 is connected with said device 64: for admitting compressed air to said valve, and the reference- characters 68 and 69 are leading-out pipes arranged between said device 64L and the respective end-portions of said cylinder 61, said pipes 68 and 69 acting respectively and alternately as inlet and exhaust pipes to and from said cylinder 61, as will be clearly evident. The referencecharacter 67 indicates an exhaust pipe which is suitably connected with the device or controller 6st. The remaining devices and parts of the door-operating mechanism, for bringing the door-sections into their closed and opened relations is the same as that de scribed in connection with the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, and need not, therefore, be further described. The operations of the various devices and parts of the air-controller will be clearly understood from an inspection of said Fig. 4.
I am fully aware that some changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the various devices and part-s, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 1. A car provided with a car-body and a platform, said platform having a step, and said platform being provided with an entrance and an exit-portion, a door for opening and closing said entrance and exitportions, said door comprising foldably connected door-sections, said sections when folded extending laterally across a portion of the platform so as to separate the entrance-portion from the exit-portion of the platform, and the said door-sections when in their extended relation extending longitudinally of the platform and closing the entrance and exit-portions near the step, and a door-operating mechanism under the control of the conductor upon the platform for sliding the said door-sections and bringing the same either into their folded or extended relations, consisting of a series of tracks, and carriages secured to said doorsections, said carriages being provided with rollers running upon said tracks, a vertically disposed rod, a handle secured upon said rod for producing oscillatory movements of said rod, and a lever-mechanism between said rod and one of said carriages, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A car provided with a car-body and a platform, said platform having a step, and said platform being provided with an entrance and an exit-portion, a door for said opening and closing said entrance and exitportions, said door comprising foldably connected door-sections, said sections when folded extending laterally across a portion of the platform so as to separate the entrance-portion from the exit-portion of the platform, and the said door-sections when in their extended relation extending longitudinally of the platform and closing the entrance and exit-portions near the step, and a door-operating mechanism under the control of the conductor upon the platform for sliding the said door-sections and bringing the same either into their folded or extended relations, consisting of a series of tracks, and carriages secured to said doorsections, said carriages being provided with rollers running upon said tracks, a vertically disposed rod, a handle secured upon said rod for producing oscillatory movements of said rod, a crank connected with the said rod, a bracket secured to a portion of the car-body, an arm pivotally connected with said bracket, a link pivotally connected at one end to said arm and at the other end to one of said carriages, and a connecting rod pivotally connected at one end to said link and at the other end to said crank, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A car provided with a car-body and a platform, said platform having a step, and said platform being provided with an entrance and an exit-portion, a track arranged beneath the platform-hood and extending laterally across a portion of the said platform, and a pair of other tracks extending longitudinally of the platform on opposite sides of said laterally extending track, each longitudinally extending track having curved end-portions terminating in close proximity upon each side of the said laterally extending track, a door for opening and closing said entrance and exit-portions, hinges secured to said door-sections for foldably connecting said door-sections, a bracket-like post extending upwardly from one of said hinges, a carriage connected with said post, grooved rollers mounted in said carriage, said grooved rollers running upon said laterally extending track, posts extending upwardly from each door-section, a swiveled carriage connected with each of last-mentioned posts, and rollers mounted in said swiveled carriages, the roll- I ers of the respective swiveled carriages running upon the respective longitudinally extending tracks, all arranged so that said door-sections when folded will extend laterally across a portion of the platform so as to separate the entrance-portion from the exit-portion of the platform, and that the door-sections when in their extended relation will extend longitudinally of the platform so as to close the entrance and exitportions near the step.
4. A car provided with a car-body and a platform, said platform having a step, and said platform being provided with an entrance and an exitportion, a track arranged beneath the platform-hood and extending laterally across a portion of the said platform, and a pair of other tracks extending longitudinally of the platform on opposite sides of said laterally extending track, each longitudinally extending track having a curved end-portion terminating in close proximity upon each side of the said laterally extending track, a door for opening and closing said entrance and exit-portions, hinges secured to said door-sections for foldably connecting said door-sections, a bracketlike post extending upwardly from one of said hinges, a carriage connected with said post, grooved rollers mounted in said carriage, said grooved rollers running upon said laterally extending track, posts extending upwardly from each door-section, a swiveled carriage connected with each of said last-mentioned posts, and rollers mounted in said swiveled carriages, the rollers of the respective swiveled carriages running upon the respective longitudinally extending tracks, all arranged so that said doorsections when folded will extend laterally across a portion of the platform so as to separate the entrance-portion from the exitportion of the platform, and that the doorsections when in their extended relation will extend longitudinally of the platform so as to close the entrance and exit-portions near the step and a door-operating mechanism under the control of the conductor upon the platform for sliding the said doorsections and bringing the same either into their folded or extended relations.
5. A car provided with a car-body and a platform, said platform having a step, and said platform being provided with an entrance and an exit-portion, a track arranged beneath the platform-hood and extending laterally across a portion of the said platform, and a pair of other tracks extending longitudinally of the platform on opposite sides of said laterally extending track, each longitudinally extending track having a curved end-portion terminating in close proximity upon each side of the said laterally extending track, a door for opening and closing said entrance and exit-portions, hinges secured to said doorsections for foldably connecting said door-sections, a bracket-like post extending upwardly from one of said hinges, a carriage connected with said post, groove rollers mounted in said carriage, said grooved rollers running upon said laterally extending track, posts extending upwardly from each door-section, a swiveled carriage connected with each of said last-mentioned posts, and rollers mounted in said swiveled carriages, the rollers of the respective'swiveled carriages running upon the respective longitudinally extending tracks, all arranged so that said doorsections when folded will extend laterally across a portion of the platform so as to separate the entrance-portion from the exitportion of the platform, and that the doorsections when in their extended relation will extend longitudinally of the platform so as to close the entrance and exit-portions near the step, and a dooroperating mechanism under the control of the conductor upon the platform for sliding the said door-sections and bringing the same either into their folded or extended relations, consisting of a vertically disposed rod, a handle secured upon said rod for producing oscillatory movements of said rod, and a lever mechanism between said rod and the post which extends upwardly from one of the hinges of said door-sections, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. A car provided with a car-body and a platform, said platform having a step, and said platform being provided with an entrance and an exit-portion, a track arranged beneath the platform-hood and extending laterally across a portion of the said platform, and a pair of other tracks extending longitudinally of the platform on opposite sides of said laterally extending track, each longitudinally extending track having a curved end-portion terminating in close proximity upon each side of the said laterally extending track, a door for opening and closing said entrance and exitportions, hinges secured to said door-sections for foldably connecting said door sections, a
bracket-like post extending upwardly from one of said hinges, a carriage connected with said post, groove rollers mounted in said carriage, said grooved rollers running upon said laterally extending track, posts extending upwardly from each door-section, a swiveled carriage connected with each of said last-mentioned posts, and rollers mounted in said swiveled carriages, the rollers of the respective swiveled carriages running upon the respective longitudinally extending tracks, all arranged so that said door-sections when folded will extend laterally across a portion of the platform so as to separate the entrance-portion from the exit-portion of the platform, and that the door-sections when in their extended relation will extend longitudinally of the platform so as to close the entrance and exitportions near the step, and a door-operating mechanism under the control of the conductor upon the platform for sliding the said door-sections and bringing the same either into their folded or extended relations, consisting of a vertically disposed rod, a handle secured upon said rod for produc ing oscillatory movements of said rod, a
crank connected with said rod, a bracket secured to a portion of the car-body, an arm pivotally connected with said bracket, a link pivotally connected at one end to said arm and at the other end to the post which extends upwardly from one of the hinges of said door-sections, and a connecting rod pivotally connected at one end to said link and at the other end to said crank, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
7. A car provided with a car-body and a platform, said platform having a step, and said platform being provided with an entrance and an exit-portion, a door for opening and closing said entrance and exit-portions, said door comprising foldably connected door-sections, said sections when folded extending laterally across a portion of the platform so as to separate the entrance-portion from the exit-portions of the platform, and the said door-sections when in their extended relation extending longitudinally of the platform and closing the entrance and exit-portions near the step, and a door-operating mechanism under the control of the conductor upon the platform for sliding the said door-sections and bringing the same either into their folded or extended relations, consisting of a series of tracks, and carriages secured to said door-sections, said carriages being provided with rollers run ning upon said tracks, a standard upon said platform, a yoke-shaped element secured upon said standard, a bracket, said bracket and said yoke-shaped element being provided with hearing portions, a pipe-like member arranged between said bearing-portions, a vertically disposed rod mounted in said pipe-like member and said bearingportions, a handle secured upon the lower end-portion of said rod for producing oscillatory movements of said rod, and a levermechanism between said rod and one of said carriages, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. A car provided with a car-body and a platform, said platform having a step, and said platform being provided with an en trance and an exit-portion, a door for opening and closing said entrance and exit-portions, said door comprising foldably connected door-sections, said sections when folded extending laterally across a portion of the platform so as to separate the entrance-portion from the exit-portions of the platform, and the said door-sections when in their extended relation extending longi-.
tudinally of the platform and closing the entrance and exit-portions near the step, and a door-operating mechanism under the control of the conductor upon the platform for sliding the said door-sections and bringing the same either into their folded or extended relations, consisting of a section of tracks, and carriages secured to said doorsections, said carriages being provided with rollers running upon said tracks, a standard upon said platform, a yoke-shaped element secured upon said standard, a bracket, said bracket and said yoke-shaped element being provided with bearing portions, a pipe-like member arranged between said bearing-portions, a vertically disposed rod mounted in said pipe-like member and said bearing-portions, a handle secured upon the lower end-portion of said rod for producing oscillatory movements of said rod, a crank connected with the said rod, a bracket secured to a portion of the car-body, an arm pivotally connected with said bracket, a link pivotally connected at one end to said arm and at the other end to one of said carriages, and a connecting rod pivotally connected at one end to said link and at the other end to said crank, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
9. A car provided with a car-body and a platform, said platform having a step, and said platform being provided with an entrance and an exit-portion, a track arranged beneath the platform-hood and extending laterally across a portion of the said platform, and a pair of other tracks extending longitudinally of the platform on opposite sides of said laterally extending track, each longitudinally extending track having a curved end-portion terminating in close proximity upon each side of the said laterally extending track, a door for opening and closing said entrance and exit-portions, hinges secured to said door-sections for foldably connecting said door-sections, a bracket-like post extending upwardly from one of said hinges, a carriage connected with said post, groove rollers mounted in said carriage, said grooved rollers running upon said laterally extending track, posts extending upwardly from each door-section, a swiveled carriage connected with each of said last-mentioned posts, and rollers mounted in said swiveled carriages, the rollers of the respective swiveled carriages running upon the respective longitudinally extending tracks, all arranged so that said door-sections when folded will extend laterally across a portion of the platform so as to separate the entranceportion from the exit-portion of the platform, and that the door-sections when in their extended relation will extend longitudinally of the platform so as to close the entrance and exit-portions near the step and a door-operating mechanism under the control of the conductor upon the platform for sliding the said door-sections and bringing the same either into their folded or extended relations, consisting of a standard upon said platform, a yoke-shaped element secured upon said standard, a bracket, said bracket and said yoke-shaped element being provided with bearing-portions, a pipe-like member arranged between said bearing-portions, a vertically disposed rod mounted in said pipe-like member and said bearing-portions, a handle secured upon the lower endportion of said rod for producing oscillatory movements of said rod, and a lever-mechanism between said rod and the post which extends upwardly from one of the hinges of said door-sections, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
10. A car provided with a car-body and a platform, said platform having a step, and said platform being provided with an entrance and an exit-portion, a track arranged beneath the platform-hood and extending laterally across a portion of the said platform, and a pair of other tracks extending longitudinally of the platform on opposite sides of said laterally extending track, each longitudinally extending track having a curved end-portion terminating in close proximity upon each side of the said laterally extending track, a door for opening and closing said entrance and exit-portions, hinges secured to said door-sections for foldably connecting said doorsections, a bracketlike post extending upwardly from one of said hinges, a carriage connected with said post, groove rollers mounted in said carriage, said grooved rollers running upon said laterally extending tracks, posts extending upwardly from each door-section, a swiveled carriage connected with each of said last-mentioned posts, and rollers mounted in said swiveled carriages, the rollers of the respective swiveled carriages running upon the respective longitudinally extending tracks, all arranged so that said doorsections when folded will extend laterally across a portion of the platform so as to separate the entrance -portion from the exitportion of the platform, and that the door sections when in their extended relation will extend longitudinally of the platform so as to close the entrance and exit-portions near the step and a door-operating mechanism under the control of the conductor upon the platform for sliding the said door-sections and bringing the same either into their foldpivotally connected at one end to said arm In testimony, that I claim the invention and at the other end to the post Which eX- set it'orth above I have hereunto set my hand tends upwardly from one of the hinges of this 20th day of April, 1910.
