Description
Enma sain @sind @titille Letters Patent No. 99,351, dated February 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARE-BOXES FOR RAILROAD-CARS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W. G. RAOUL, of' Independence, in the parish of Tangipahoa, and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Fare Boxes; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
.'lhis invention relates to a new and usefulimprove- .ment in boxes for receiving passengers fare on cars of street-railroads, omnibusses, and other vehicles for transport-ing passengers; and consists in the construction and arrangement hereinafter described.
yIn the accompanying drawings- Fignre l is a vertical section of the fare-box, through lthe line :c x of fig. 2. y
Figure 2 is a front elevation.
Fig-ure 3 is an end elevation'.
.Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This fare-box consists, mainly, of an outer fixed glass or transparent cylinder, a, and an inner revolving transparent cylinder, b, supported bythe ends of the box c, which extend up for that purpose.
The inner cylinder is confined to a central shaft, l1,
by means of heads on the shaft.
The ends of the shaft pass through the projecting end-pieces e of the box, and have gear-wheels, f, fastened thereto, as seen in the drawing.'
The inner cylinder is revolved by means of levers g g, on each end of the box, each of which. has a segment of a wheel, h, attached to their inner sides, the cogs of Whichengage with the wheels j', when the levers are moved back and forth. These levers are piv oted to the ends of the box c, att', and are connected together, above the cylinders, by the head-piece j.
k k represent stop-pins, which limit the movement of the levers.
Each of the glass cylinders a b has two apertures, 1m. m' and n By 'pushing the head-piece j, as indicated by the arrow, the aperture m', in the cylinder b, will be turned up, so as to register with a in the cylinder a.
lVhen the fare is introduced, the levers are thrown back, as seen in g. l, by means of springs o.
On the inside of the revolving cylinder b are two aprons, p g.v
When the fare is introduced, it .slides from p on to q, and from thence onto the bottom of cylinder b, as the reverse motion takes place, where it is retained, for inspection by the driver and passengers, -until the levers are worked again, when the fare slides from the cylinder, and is deposited in the cash-drawer beneath.
Light is thrown through the transparent cylinders in the night-time (by means of reflectors) from the `ordinary car-lamp, by which means the interior of the.
cylinders is illuminated.
1n the lower portion of the fare-box, beneath 'the cash-drawen'the lower ends of the levers g are con nected together by the bar r, to which aspring bellcrank, s, is attached, supported by the stand t.
Vhenever the levers are operated, as for the introduction of fare, the bell-hammer@ is raised, and, when the levers are thrown back by the springs o, the hammer strikes the bell, giving notice that a fare has been deposit-ed. f'
w represents the cash-drawer. i
The principal lobj ect of this invention is to avoid the necessity of employing a conductor on street-cars for receiving the passenger-fare- By this arrangement, the passenger deposits his own fare. To do this, he pushes back the levers, by means of the head-'piece j. When the apertures m n register, (which takes place when the levers strike the stops 75,) he deposits his fare,'which is received, and held for inspection by the driver, as well as by the passengers, until another fare is deposited, as before stated.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire, to secure by Letters Patent- 1. yThe combination of the transparent cylinders a b, having apertures m m', n n', and aprons p q, with gears ff, rack h, levers g g, spring o, and pins It It', all arranged as set forth.
2. In combination with subject-matter of above clause, the cash-drawer and the striking-device s c u, all as shown and described.
Witnesses: W". G. RAOUL.
B. M. MOORE, WM. DUNCAN.
