To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Francesco Siinronr, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Monteponi, Sardinia, Italy, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Electric Furnace, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a typeof electric resistance furnace in which the muflie intended to contain the material to be treated, is closed at one of its ends and mounted so as to be able to assume the vertical position with the open end facing upward when it is desired to introduce a charge, a horizon tal or almost horizontal position during the treatment, and the vertical position with the opening downward, for discharging the Ina-- terial.
A construction of the furnace according to this invention, specially adapted for the treatment of zinc ores, is illustrated by way of example in theaccompanying drawing.
As shown on the drawing, the mufliehas a shape similar to that of the niufiies used in zinc metallurgy, but it is formed of a refractory material which is a bad conductor of electricity, such as refractory mixtures of clay, coke or graphite, so,t hat it is possible to heat it up to 12004300? C. by an electric current supplied by electrodes '2, 2. The mulile 1 is arranged in a cylindrical sheet metal receptacle 3 closed at one end, and between the wall of the muffle 1 and the sheet metal receptacle, there is a refractory lining 5 formed of several layers of non conducting material 6 or air chambers.
The sheet metal receptacle 3 with its refractory. lining can be eXtended, at its open end beyond the mouth of the rnufile, either portion iprojectnigib'eyond the mouth of the mufile and provided with a movable cover 11. In any case, the receptacle 3 is bearings 8, so as to'be able to rotate thereon, By nr'eansof aworm wheel secured to one of the'said pivots 7, and of a worm mounted on the corresponding bracket or bearing 8, or in any other suitable manner, the rotation of the furnace can be easily eflected.
rarnn'r onerou- 291%, Serial No. 578,044.
The charging of the furnace is effected by bringing it into the vertical position with the open end upward and by introducing into the hopper 9 the material to be treated, such as calcined calamine, roasted blends or other ores or lay-products mixed with poor coal. When the charging is completed, the receptacle is brought into practically a horizontal. position, and a condenser is applied. to the mouth of the muliie for collecting the Zinc, Finally, the cover 11 is put on and thus forms a hot chamber around the condenser. A plate of refractory material supports the front portion of the condenser and prevents radiation. It is preferable to provide the condenser with an extension 13. idhen the process is completed, the cover 11, the condenser 16 and the plate 12 are removed, whereupon, by means of the worm, the furnace is brought into tie vertical position with the open end downward, and the residues of the distillation are discharged through an opening 14: provided below the apparatus.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an electric furnace for the distilla tion of zinc from its ores or by-products, the
combination of a mufi'le closed at one end and made of refractory material which is a bad electric conductor, a Vessel closed at one end to contain the muliie and pivoted so that it can be rotated about a horizontal axis and adapted to extend at its open end beyond the mouth of the minds, a condenser for zinc adapted to be connected to the mouth of the inuliie and to extend beyond the open end of the vessel, and a member to close the mouthof the vessel and having an opening through which the condenser can pass for the purpose set forth.
2. In an electric furnace for the distillation of zinc from its ores or by-products, the
combination of a mutlie closed at one end and made of refractory material which is abad electric conductor, a vessel closed at one end to contain the mulfie and pivoted so that itcan berotated about a horizontal axis and adapted to extend a segment of its circum ference at its open end beyond the mouth of the muffle, a cover to complete the unextended segment of Ms circumference, a con- In testimony whereof I have signed my denser for zinc adapted to be connected to name to this specification in the presence of the mouth of the mufile and to extend betwo subscribing Witnesses.
