Be it known that I, CHARLES HART, citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Heaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to water heaters especially adapted for use in connection with range boilers, and the principal object of the same is to provide a water heater in which a large heating surface is provided and which is thoroughly acted upon with the consumption of a small amount of gas.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it is contemplated employing an insulated casing which is provided with upper and lower water chambers having radiating arms, said chambers being centrally connected by means of a straight pipe, and having their arms connected by means of coils, the lower water chamber being mounted directly above a gas burner which is inclosed in the casing and provided with radiating burner arms arranged so that the heat therefrom will act directly upon the lower water chamber and its arms, upon the coils, and also provide for a circulation of heat between the coils and the central straight connecting pipe between the two water chambers, thus assuring of all parts of the heating surface being broughtI into contact with the heat from the burner.
It will be understood, of course, that the essential features of the invention involved in carrying out the objects of the invention set forth above are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, but a preferred and simple embodiment of the same is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated a central vertical sectional view of the improved water heater.
Referring to said drawings by numerals, 1 designates the casing of the improved water heater which is preferably cylindrical and provided with an insulating lining 2, which may be of asbestos or similar material. A bottom cap 3 is provided with a seat at its outer edge for the lower end of the casing, said seat being composed of an upstanding flange t over which the end of the casing is fitted and an outstanding ange 5 upon which the said end rests. The said cap is provided with an annular depressed portion which surrounds its center as indicated at 6 and at its central portion it is provided with an upstanding flange 7 which surrounds a central opening 8, said flange 7 serving to retain a collar 9 of a gas burner 10 over said opening 8. The gas burner is provided with a plurality of radiating arms 10 having openings 11 arranged in their tops, the outer portion 12 of the burner resting on the flanged rim 13 which surrounds the depressed portion 6 of the cap 3. A pipe extension 14 projects laterally from the cap 3 and its outer end is threaded for attachment with a gas pipe 15. The outlet end of the extension 14 discharges into the depressed portion 6 of the cap so as to discharge into and through the burner arms 10. The necessary supply of air is provided through the central collar 9 of the burner, and also through openings formed adjacent to the outer edge of the cap 3.
The upper end of the casing 1 is provided with a cap 17 having a flanged outer edge 18 for tight engagement with said casing, said cap being provided with a central upstanding collar 19 over which a smoke pipe 20 is fitted for carrying oft' the products of combustion.
A cold water pipe 21 enters the heater through the opening 8 of the cap 3 and through the collar 9 of the gas burner, the inner end of said pipe being threaded for engagement with a tube extension 22 of a water chamber 23 provided with radiating hollow arms 24. Said water chamber also carries Yan upwardly projecting tube eXtension 25 which has a threaded engagement with one end of a straight pipe 26 the other end of which is in threaded engagement with a bottom tube extension 27 of an upper water chamber 28 which is provided with hollow radiating arms 29, arranged similar to the arms of the water chamber 23. The upper water chamber 28 is also provided with an upstanding tube extension 30 which has a threaded engagement with one end of a pipe 31 extending through the collar 19 of the upper cap and the smoke pipe 20, said pipe 31 being in communication with a range boiler or like receptacle, not shown.
Preferably the hollow radiating arms of the upper and lower water chambers are in series of four to each chamber, the arms of wia-.....myv-vseach chamber being correspondingly disl outer edge of said plate, a burner cap for 2oI posed, and the said arms of the two chambers are connected by means of the four vertically arranged water coils 32 which surround the Central pipe 26.
The upper and lower caps are held to their respective ends of the casing by means of the bolts 33 provided with the exterior heads 34 and lock nuts 35, whereby the same may be held in position over said ends, or readily detached therefrom when necessary or desirable.
VhatI I claim as my invention is A heater comprising a bottom plate provided with an annular depression and a central opening, a fuel inlet pipe communicating with said depression, a flange surrounding said central opening, a flange surrounding said depression, a flange adjacent the said plate, said cap provided with side walls resting within the flange surrounding said depression, a central collar for said cap resting within the flange surrounding said central opening, the top of said cap provided with outlet openings, a casing resting upon said plate and surrounding said iiange adjacent the outer edge of said plate, a water inlet pipe passing through said central opening, heating coils communicating with said water pipe, and an outlet pipe communicating with the upper ends of said coils.
